Oil based quenchants - mete and Kevin?

emulsions of water and soluble oil combine the worst features of water and oil quenchants.
Thanks, Kevin. This seems to be the case in other areas of craft as well, as I have experienced. The old shop manuals seems to be fond of useless emulsions. just because they seem so clever I imagine. :p

The office number for the sales reps that helped me is 413 543 2378. That is the Indian Orchard, MA location. Ask for Steph, she was nice to deal with. Maybe ( big maybe ) they just chaged the email addys.

Could you folks e-mail me any good contact information that you get for the MA Heatbath outlet? Detroit can be so difficult to work with that I often send peopl looking for the place in MA.

Yes that is the book Darren. Hey, you should get a few copies and some of Parks oils and sell them as a package! :D Everything a guy needs to get started heat treating like the pros! :D ;)

That's a great idea! :) Actually, after we talked on the phone a few weeks back, I really started to consider carrying the Parks oils...just have to wait until the finances are there to take the plunge in getting a few drums! :)

I think the demand for #50 has went up a bit lately on this forum alone. With good information and you helping people get some good oils there could be knives with some wicked heat treating in the future. I love the internet and what it can do for the knifemaking business! :D

I was just expressing my happiness, and envy, on another forum about the never before seen opportunities for makers starting out to get good information. Metallurgists and material scientists ready to answer questions right at your fingertips. Instant e-mail links to virtually any type of supply. It is a very exciting time for knifemaking.

Watching all the requests for information on Heat Baths products very encouraging. I feel that if I could have had any role in such a movement it is every bit as rewarding as making one of my finest blades.

Well,

I finally got ahold of this guy at HeatBath (Detroit office)

Dan (313) 895-7215 ext. 191

Dan told me that for the #50 it is $5.55/gallon and AAA is about the same. With the $100 minimum order, it would be most wise to order either 10 gallons of each, or say 15 gal of #50 and 5 gal of AAA. If you buy 1 - 5 gal bucket of eac, it will still be $100. Of course shipping on 4 buckets will be a lot more than 2.

The cruddy thing was that he told me I'd have to fax in 3 credit references to set up an account with them. "What, no credit cards????"

He said they have the software and should be up for credit card orders in a couple days (hopefully). I plan on calling back in a few, as it sounds like a pain to set up an account.

If anyone else in my general area (alabama and sourounding states) would be interested in combining an order we can see if we can save a worthwhile amount.

I sent them a money order Nick. They were also able to ship the four buckets I bought to three different addresses.
