Probe: Oil funds paid for bombers.
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK -- Saddam Hussein diverted money from the U.N. oil-for-food program to pay millions of dollars to families of Palestinian suicide bombers who carried out attacks on Israel, say congressional investigators who uncovered evidence of the money trail.

The former Iraqi president tapped secret bank accounts in Jordan -- where he collected bribes from foreign companies and individuals doing illicit business under the humanitarian program -- to reward the families up to $25,000 each, investigators told The Associated Press.

Documents prepared for a hearing today by the House International Relations Committee outline the new findings. Today's hearing, however, will focus on a French bank that handled most of the money for the program.

An audit by a U.S. regulatory agency of a small sample of transactions out of the $60 billion U.N. escrow account managed by BNP-Paribas has raised serious questions concerning the bank's compliance with American money-laundering laws, investigators said.

"There are indications that the bank may have been noncompliant in administering the oil-for-food program," committee chairman Henry Hyde, R-Ill., said. "If true, these possible banking lapses may have facilitated Saddam Hussein's manipulation and corruption of the program."

The humanitarian program let Iraq trade oil for food, medicine and other items. But investigators say Saddam made more than $21.3 billion in illegal revenue under the program. Copyright 2005 Associated Press.

Too bad about the money being diverted, but of course there's a whole support system not just Iraq that makes sure that the families of these suicide bombers are taken care of, including money from many of the states we are on friendly terms with in the Gulf.

I feel sorry for the Palestinians in a way. The rest of the oil rich countries that hate the Jews use them as a sort of fifth column to attack Israel because they don't have the b*lls to fight them head to head. In the process the Palestinians who none of them really want anyway remain in poverty and without a home really. If all the oil countries would pitch in and provide some economic development in the occupied territories they could probably actually do something tangible to improve the Palestinians lives, but of course then they would have jobs, and a reason to live, and they would lose their secret army.

You're full of surprises, Hollow; A thoughtful post on politics! Thank you.

I feel sorry for all the groups of people used like tools. Unfortunately, radical Islam uses young people.

Here's something I wonder:

What IF:

The Palestinians had renounced violence when the Peace Process first got started? What if they would have started marching in the streets saying "we shall overcome" and practicing non violence?? I have no way of proving this, but I believe that either Israel would have sat down and negotiated with them or the international community would have become involved to a major degree and the problem would be settled.

There would be a seperate Palistinian State right now.

Arafat screwed his people into the ground. He was the worst kind of leader. He sold out.

The London bombings show us violence is here to stay. There will always be a new young kid who thinks it swell to blow something up. Think about it- now matter what we build, what internationally we agree upon- someone is going to try and break it apart.

Whatever he was, I'm sure he's someplace pretty hot right now and surrounded by 72 virginal pigs.

I can't recall where I heard it, but I recall an interview with Clinton and he said that when he was going to leave office that Arafat told him he was a great man for working for Peace in the Middle East. Clinton said "No I'm not, I'm a failure when it comes to middle east peace and it's YOUR FAULT.

Another thing about Arafat that is interesting is to this day nobody knows what he died from. I'm sure if he was poisioned as some of his supporters alleged it would be shouted from the housetops. My theory is either he was an alcoholic and died of cirrohsis, but since drinking is forbidden by the Koran they don't want it to get out, or he had HIV.

I vote for Arafat's dying of HIV/AIDS.....I've heard several sources that say despite the wife (who was gone alot), Arafat was partial to little boys....and those rumors were many years before his death, when I was still traveling for Sam.

You can’t buy off these terrorists. They have attacked us and are aggressors. We should not offer them any concessions or appeasement. We should never sacrifice our principles.

I think we will fight them… one way or the other, like it or not, sooner or later, there in Iraq or here on American soil. For this moment, I really can't point to any greater truth than that unity is crucial…. to impart to our friends, to the terrorists, to other nations, that we as a Nation, are in complete agreement to stop terrorism. To do otherwise, puts our troops in danger and causes other countries to question our resolve.
Thanks,

I have the sickening feeling, no, knowledge, that no matter what we do, what good comes to the Middle East, there will be bombs.

They're here to stay.
I'm sorry.

You are right. Much of the Palestinians did get ripped by Are is fat! Like Munk said... He screwed them into the ground!

Without Arafat, Palestine would have their own country right now!

That may be the nature of this enemy. If bombs must fall... let them fall somewhere else and on somebody else. I am absolutely appalled that the terrorists are now bombing their own people. They will stop at nothing to make their point and NOW, I stronly suspect they are unsure of what that pont is... they have lost it! This irrationallity is complete insanity!

The insanity of terrorism is a sad issue to contemplate! I am overcome with consternation, shock and dismay over their actions. I never realized untill a few months ago that they would so willingly blow up their own people.

Often, like some liberals, I look for the good in people, try to see their side of it, attempt to figure out their issues, seek understanding... and so on! These people are gone... beyond rationality! Blowing up their own people is a death knell in the chaos of their own making! Killing them is a solution I detest, but, now wholeheartedly embrace as the answer to terrorism! Get rid of them for their own good, for the good of their own people!

I am absolutely certain that appeasement will bring ruin to us all.
Thanks,

iBear

When Russia and the US realized they weren't going to blow each other and the world to smithereens, we all breathed a collective sigh of relief.

But kids and terrorists with bombs...kids with nukes...they won't be old enough to learn better, they'll be too insane to know better.

I don't see a way out of this.

Killing them is the only solution they respect! They can't kill us when they are dead!

Death is the only way out. I detest war, but reluctantly embrace it now!

Ibear? Let's move away from talk of killing, OK?

You can only remove so many threats; it's the process, don't you see? There is a aparatus in motion that produces suicide bombers, and until the process wanes, the bombs won't.

Economic growth will help the Middle East. Transitions of rule that allow more freedom will help. But the process is embedded deep, and we can't extinguish it overnight.

Time, effort, international cooperation, and God's Grace will help.
