I've never tried oil hardening but I'm getting close to ready to try. I'm wondering what most of you use for a tank to put your quenching oil in?

I have a few ideas, but surely there is something that is most commonly used.

Thanks,

Some here could say the pot I use could be bigger, setting a fan by it helps as the heat will rise.

I use an older style deep-fat fryer, (an over sized Fry-Daddy) just plug it in and presto the oil is at your temperature.

Just an intresting note (to me) ....

Just came back from a trip to my folks place in Minnesota, and my Dad and I set up a temporary Bladesmith shop.

We hammered out 8 blades from discarded Rotter-Tiller tings and hardened them in a steel 5-Gallon pail that we set a propane weed-burner under for a few.

Shell Rotell 'T' Diesel oil out of a Kobota tractor (50 hours) preheated to 175 Deg quenched very well, in fact I was surprised that I needed to temper @ 430 (by my Mom's oven?) to get the hardness I wanted on a few gift kitchen knives,,,,,real cutters!

My $0.02 cents worth,,,just plan out how your going to make life easy heating the oil each time,,,,,, maybe toss in an idea for a good lid?

I use a 30 qt Bayou Classic turkey fryer from Home Depot or Lowes (can't remember)

I use an old roasting pan for smaller knives, and a stainless steel 1/2 wide, full length, 4 inch deep steam table pan for longer ones. -Matt-

I use an old pressure cooker for my Parks quench oil. Nice is when I am done I can cover it well.

I saw a perfect one, it was a mini oily waste can with the spring lid, looked good, but it was behind a fence at a military base I was at.

At my high school they "heat treat" their mild steel chipping hammers (what a gong show) in a steel bucket, it is a nice bucket.

The ones I make are 6" pipe welded to a 12" round base ring (for stability).

I'm just finishing two up ,for Bruce Bump and another forumite. I'll post some photos this weekend.

I got the shell from a fire extinguisher from the junkyard. The lid from a jar of peas fit perfectly.

I use an old ammo can. Seals right up when you're done so no spills.
