Hi. Got the question.
How should I choose the motor to run hydraulic pump with 20GPM and 3000PSI? I think there is some kind of a conversion between GPM\PSI and horsepower or wattage.

I got it... 42HP required, too much.
What motors you guys use to drive your hydraulic presses?

Hi Dimitry, I don't have a hydraulic press and I've never built one, but I talked to Tommy McNabb about the ones that he builds and asked him what size motor he used, he said "I don't know, one that's big enough" ;) The one that I saw he built for Bill Bisher had a large tefc motor, but nowhere near 40HP. If you put me on the spot I'd say it was no smaller than 3HP and no larger than 5HP.

I saw his parts list. I was just qurious if there are any other options.
I have to put new wiring in the garage for 3HP motor and may be the separate electrical panel. So that pulls a lot more money.
Plus I do not have 3 phases, so I would need a VFC converter that convert 220 single phase into 220X3phase.
And finaly I am not sure my 100A service will take my house and my toys...
So untill I'll figure everything out I will still hammer as many men before.
Thanks for the answers!

100A service is a thing of the past - even my little duplex has 150A service. 200 is becoming much more common. You should be able to have your service upgraded by the electric co.

Yes, you would need 220V wiring to the garage, but with that a single phase 3HP motor will suffice.

Ha... I wish. I will pay a lot for that, and I mean A LOT. My house was upgraded from 60A to 100A just two or three years ago. And Utilities put new cable in the street and all houses. So for the 200A expansion they will need to dig a lot of dirt again.
Looks like there is very little chance of having the press. Well, I will be in good shape, wich is not that bad.

I guess things are a little different out there, it doesn't cost me a dime to get my service upgraded, just have to show that I need more power.

To revive your press idea, I don't think you need 20gpm. The 3 hp motor mentioned should be able to run an 8gpm pump. Still need the 220v, but maybe a dryer or range outlet would work. The Batson press manual is a huge help in matching components.

Good luck with it, Craig

If power supply is a problem, go with a gas motor. A 5-8HP gas engine will supply the same power as a 3HP electric motor. You can even put the motor outside,in a little pump house like tiny shed building. Open the front to run the motor, when not in use, close and lock it to keep the elements and kids out.Run the exhaust through the mini-sheds roof. The hoses can be run through a small hole in the wall.It is best, IMHO, to use metal covered hoses. Ten foot hoses should allow plenty of room.
