Oil quench speeds

Can anyone explain the quench speeds given for oils? Are people here refering to the time given to reach 1112F? Would a oil rated at 7.2 seconds to reach 1112F with a 1/2 inch iconel probe be a fast enough oil for W1 steel? Thanks

A search for quench oil speeds or quenchant speeds should bring up a good list of threads with explanations. I know I have written detailed explanations of the nickel ball test at least a few times.

Thanks I have done google searches on this forum swordforum and Don Fogg's on this topic. I gather there are 3 test probes used. It still remains a mystery what test is used in the Mcmaster Carr 11 second oil. Perhaps some one could tell how to interpret the data from the numbers assigned from a nickleball test to compare to an 1/2 inch inconel probe with bench marks at 600 400 and 200C? If a oil is rated to cool at a maxiumun of less than 200F per second with a test probe, how does one translate that to a blade that must cool from 1450 to 1000 in less than a second?

If it's the GM Quenchometer measure, it should work like this: LINK (about halfway down).

As to translating, all I can gather is that W1 needs a fast oil like Park's 50, which some have speculated is a about a 7 second oil.
