Recommendation? Oily/Discolored New Slysz Bowie

Amazon at it again! Def want to return it, or (in true Amazon buyer fashion) put a Chinese clone fake in the box and return it!

Seriously, I know they sometimes are below MAP, but you’re spending a lot of $ for a Spyderco regardless, buy one from a reputable source.

What did you end up doing OP? I bought a Slysz Bowie from KC a week ago and received it on Friday. It has stains almost identical to yours. They can't be felt by fingernail though. My knife was manufactured 8/17. I don't want to return it, as they are almost impossible to find now.

Have you guys tried Zippo Lighter fluid and or acetone yet? This stuff works wonders on oil. Use a tooth brush and Scrub a bit. Should come right off.

If you have some brake or choke cleaner in the garage that could work in a pinch too.

Don't do a damn thing but send it back. Once you start messing with it, it is unethical to return it.

On mine, it sure seems to be under the finish. I gently rubbed it with rubbing alcohol, and that didn't do anything. As far as returning it, I planned to EDC this beauty, so it's not a complete turnoff. I'm just left wondering if the blade steel integrity is comprised.

No need to risk it. Return the thing and buy from a supporting dealer here.

I'm pretty sure most dealers are sold out already. But yea that would have been idea. Honestly cleaning it is not going to hurt it at all.

Alcohol will not remove caked on oil. Again, you will need to use what I've mentioned else live with it.

Unless he means another KC...Knife Center is a supporting dealer here.
True. I thought it was the Op who bought it from Amazon. My mistake. The point remains the same though. You shouldn't get a new knife with undisclosed staining. I'd return it no matter the rarity. It's a production knife. They will be available from sources for quite a while if you know where to look and are diligent.

The production run is over. I've searched all of North America and haven't found 1. And yes OP got the knife from Amazon, I purchased mine from Knife Center. As far as the marking, I'm not even sure it's caked on oil as it looks and feels like it's under or part of the finish. I may try acetone.

Yes, I know it is discontinued. They will be popping up on the secondary market though. If damaged heat treat is a concern then send it back. Not worth it. If you are for sure keeping it and willing to continuing to mess with it I would hit it with a bit of flitz.

There are still some out there.

Thanks for the info Craytab and Mo2. If I do try anything more I'll report back here with the results. I agree with the majority of reviews I've watched and read though, this is a wonderful folder.

For an update for all.

I ended up keeping it. The stain did come off the other side. While I don't like it, if i cut things with the knife, its eventually not going to be perfect anyway.

I may drive down to spyderco on the new year just to make sure its not a fake. Perhaps they may have some tips on how to get the stain off.

While I keep hearing about perfect knives from every vendor, I don't think I've found one that is truly "Perfect" yet. Every knife seems to have some little flaw.
