Right after Jaxx left the yard me and the Mistress got acquainted. After the initial meet and obligatory sheathing/unsheathing and inspection
I put this Mistress to work and boy was she hungry

There is a large pile of Oak that had been sawed up into large pieces two years ago after a storm took the tree down. This stuff is hard and has some crazy grain.

Very recently between the time this pass around was organized and Jaxx stopped by another Mistress showed up at my door! This one hails from the recent Knob Creek show, appears to be .25, has no CBT, and has some very interesting DARK Tequila mags. This is great because I have two different generations of Mistress to compare, and they are different in feeling and performance. That being said they both feel great in the hand and are absolute beasts.

Grips

The biggest difference between these two is the handle. They both have mags but they are cut/finished differently. The G10 is slicker (as usual) than the linen but in this case the difference has more to do with the surface texture resulting from the cuts and routing. The G10 mags almost seem like they were blasted with something to take the edges off and they are also more round in all directions. The linen handles are a bit more blocky and feel semi squarish at points, and the surface textures left by the machining are much sharper. I don’t mean that they hurt or cut my hand but the difference was noticeable even with leather work gloves on.

While wearing gloves retention of the blade during use was no problem. Using the blades without gloves proved to be a different story, nothing slipped out of my hand but I did have to pay more attention to my grip with the G10 handle. Also the linen with the more aggressive surface could definitely rough up your hand, particular right behind your index finger where the texture is pretty pointy.

Blade

Both blades are of equal dimensions and sharpness, the real difference here is the CBT. There were noticeable differences during use. I managed to get both of them stuck several times, sinking them below the spine on the first hit (rip not crosscut I’m not the Hulk). The totally flat blade seemed to bite deeper but was harder to dislodge than the CBT. Either way a bit of baton action (not on or near the handles!) sorted things out quickly.

There were actually a few pieces that I went straight though in one hit, that’s when I started to draw an audience/attention from my family and neighbor, I probably looked like a crazy person while I was swing those beasts.

The bottom line after round one is…..

GET ONE!

The CGFBM is a pleasure to use, the balance is good and the weight is in the right place, this is a powerful blade indeed.

I will be testing out belt carry and pitting these two against each other some more as the week goes by and I will update this thread with some more thoughts and pics.

And now for the pics

Alright folks time for part 2 :)

Enter the SHBM

These first three shots show the relative weights between the CBT CGFBM, KC2014 Flat CGFBM, and my old school SHBM. As you can see the SHBM is the lightest by a fair amount. This is also very noticeable during carry. The FBM's are heavy on the belt but I don't think it is one that most would be taking on a long hike on the belt, IMHO pack carry is the way to go with the FBM.

As for the performance of the SHBM compared to the CGFBM I really cannot say anything that Cliff Stamp has not. The long and short of it is she is an awesome big knife, is easy to carry and is very well rounded but she is not a chopping beast like the FBM. The Fusion handles work out MUCH better for me when chopping hard on stuff. The SHBM crushes my pinky a bit when my grip slides back, this is a non issue with the Fusion handles.

This is the conclusion of my little review of Jaxx's pass around Mistress :) I will take one more set of photos of the knife and it's overall condition before I box her up and send her to the next lucky fella.

Jaxx,

Thanks very much for putting this together and including me, it was a lot of fun and very informative.

Cheers!

Nice! Thank you for all the pix and the review, and you're very welcome! Hey, you still have her for the weekend, in case you thought otherwise. :)
Just let me know when that sweet SHBM wants to get passed around like a... ;) :D:D
