Ok but seriously. Why buy a 7?

I got a 2, I got a 10, I got a 9. Soooooo what can the 7 do that those cant that would warrant the purchase other than the usual "buy em all" response? I can never bring myself to get the 7 bcuz let's be honest, I can't for the life of me think of what the heck it can accomplish that my current arsenal cannot. The 2 does it all, the 10 is my new light camping/hiking and hunting blade, and the 9 just pulverizes every piece of wood it sees. So tell me beckerverse, what does the 7 do better than the rest? Where does it excel?

Just an fyi, I've never held one, nor do I have a "reputable" Kabar dealer near me to fondle one, so I really need some good info in order to purchase one blindly

For me the 7 will do what both the BK2 and BK9 will do, but I only need to pack one blade.

Lighter then the BK2 and takes less room in my pack then the BK9.

Its my fav becker blade.....

But can it chop like the 2? I carry the 2 alone, since it don't need any help, does it really have the same chopping ability, but also the control to play small ball and be the one blade solution?

Just like Flexxx said; it does it all.

That's all I've go to say about that.

Because Flexxx will hunt you down if you don't buy a 7. Ive wondered the same thing myself Clich. I checked one out that a buddy ordered a couple weeks ago. I haven't used one, but just from handling it I would agree it seems like a good in-between of the 2 and 9.

I have the 2 7 9 10. Have not really used the 10 yet to compare. I like the 7 because it can do what the 9 does. I mean lets face it. Are you gonna attack a 9'' tree with a knife? The 2 is a beast but sometimes just a lil short. So you have the 7. Fills in the middle.

Just curious: where you from clich? If your in the ct area, I have a brand new 7 i was gonna use as my first modder. I'll let ya try her out if you like

I want a 5, bcuz it won an award and becuz i need a kitchen knife that isnt a little wuss, but i really cant see why i need a 7. Maybe i should get one and hold it, then if i dont like it just return it. I hate not having a dealer around that i can at least hold something before i drop cash on it.

I live in Pa so its a bit of a hike to fondle a $70 knife :D plus i think i would end up passing Olean and i could just raid kabar and try em out. But also it fills in the middle but does that mean i need all three? Can it really stand alone? can it gut and skin and chop and baton and whittle and baton? i really need to hold one i think. I guess ill just have to order one and "keep the tags on" until i can figure out whether or not its for me

I hear ya. Sry thought I heard you were in Mass.

I personally do not have to skin. I no longer choose to hunt. I did use one to fillet a yellow fin once. Kinda over kill. It can baton, it can chop, it can whittle. I think it would whittle better with a choil. But I do just fine with out one. I like it for making firesticks. I guess what I am getting at is you can just carry a 7 and not a 2 and 9 together.
But hey go with the 5 and let me know. Maybe we can trade for a bit. Never held a 5. :)

+1

It was my Becker cherry. Did we mention it was light?

I've got the same combo you have clich, 2(s), 9 and 10, and I can't for the life of me figure out why I would ever *need* a 7. That said, I'd give my lefticle testicle for a 77, but that's because S30V and me were made for each other. And I could see how the premium steel might serve some durability purposes that a 1095CV 7 or 9 might not be well-suited for (I'm thinking mostly living near an ocean here, which my wife and I are seriously considering making a move towards).

I've always kinda figured I'd end up with a 7 someday, but it will either be an impulse buy or just a timing thing where I have some knife money set aside and no other knife than I want worse than another Becker. But unless something changes drastically, I can't ever envision myself *needing* one.

I would personally opt for the 5 right now, it's a little more delicate than the 7, which would fit me quite good because I see myself in little need of heavy chopping and batoning lately.

I'll tell ya what Clich; wait for my review on the 5 before you choose between the 5 and 7. I have 'em both now, and I love the 7. When I took the 5 out of the box though, let me tell ya, I was in love. Kinda like the way Flexxx is in love with his 2  but not. :D Seriously though, I love the 5 I used it a bit to make lunch, and I'm hoping soon to be able to get out on a trail again to see how it does with something a little harder than a potato :)

Wow, you guys. When I made my thread about wether to buy a 7 or 9, everyone seemed to lean toward the 9, and now here lately every thread I see seems that everyone is a 7 fan. Now, once again, due to the threads around here lately, I'm stuck on wether or not to go for the 9 or the 7. Thanks, guys.

OT, Clich, I think it's a disease that you catch when you buy your first Becker. From then on out, you've gotta have them all. I havn't seen anyone who just buys one( or two, or three, or four) Becker and leaves it at that. I'm sure if you go ahead and buy one, and end up not liking it then someone around here will buy it from you. I'm almost 100% positive.

More or less.

You have to evaluate the environment and the mission, and not just go by how many people vote for a 2 or a 7 or a 9.

What do you need a big knife for? What specific tasks do you perform now that one of these could do better? The 7 is a great average size general-purpose big knife. Or do you do more thick hardwoods or more swamp or more hunting or more SAR or more camping?

I'll tell ya, I'm just a Becker newbie compared to most around here but I own the 7, 2, 11 and 14 and I just can't quit going back to the 2. The 7 is sweet don't get me wrong but the 2 just keeps getting used and can't be replaced. The 7 can't chop as good and is harder to handle for the small work do to it's length and really small choil. The 2 just seems to do everything better for me...
