Obviously I have been to coy for my own good.

Those of you out there who own LARGE CUSTOM** FIXED BLADES, at least 7" in length.

Tell me who makes your favorite and why.

Yes, this is a search for makers.

** Custom, of course refering to the dreaded and despised Les Robertson definition (AKA US Knifemakers Guild definition).

Gus, don't beat me up to bad. I'm not selling anything! Im looking to buy!

I've been favorably impressed with Bill Siegle's work. I like his designs, all of his knives I've seen are razor sharp, and his pricing is very reasonable. I also have a knife by Bob Hankins that I like very much. Bob is a new maker, and I feel his designs have very clean lines, and good workmanship given his pricing and relatively new status as a knife-maker. Both of these makers make extremely solid knives, which I would definitely trust to stand up to substantial abuse.

The Biggest...Badest Custom I own is by Max Burnett of Dgg Custom Knives. Forged from L6 steel and modeled after a Daniel Winkler Bowie. Max put his own touches in it, he also built it to take down a wall. The blade is textured and blued to give it charcter is if the sweeping guard that acts like it's own display stand wasn't enough.

Hands down my favorite maker for big knives is Ted Frizzell of Mineral Mountain. The reason? Because I sell them! Nah, actually I sell them because I love them. Great looking users at a great price. My next favorite would be Strider- they are so unique looking and built tough. Others I really admire: Trace Rinaldi, Jerry Hossom (yeeha!) and the Japanese-influenced makers (Snody, Corkum, Hayes all rock). There are others, but that's about all I have at the tip of my brain at the moment.

Bill Herndon makes some of the best. He has a line of customs that are in use by Russian Spec. Forces. Plus Bill is one heck of a nice guy.

Chubby,

Of course we do. I have owned several.

I will have Jim's Vanguard knife at the Blade Show.

If your there stop by and take a look.

The maker we are talking about is Jim Hammond.

The SEAL-TAC and Cobra Gold aren't bad knives either.

Les,

Based on my knives owned to date, I have to go with John Fitch. I have quite a bit of experience with a couple of John's bigger blades and they handle and perform wonderfully.

I really like his Ozark Camp knife (10" blade). This knife belies it's size with quick handling and light feel and it just plain CUTS! Have a Trooper bowie coming that I expect to perform great as well. His Ozark Kitchen Carver is a delight in the food prep arena as well

John knows how to forge big knives (and his smaller Ranger rocks as well)that feel AND work great. I await his MS stamp too, but am glad I didn't wait for it before I bought his knives

I would agree with the others here, John Fitch makes the best big knives on the planet IMO. Hell i try and bang one out every now and then, here is the latest big one.

9-3/4" blade of Hand forged 5160 (no power hammer here, all elbow grease

) Handle is walnut, guard/trim are s.s. The blade may show some marks, havent cleaned it up from testing, its a CUTTER>

THANKS!! Matt.

That pic is just the right size! (but there are tools on Photopoint for re-sizing and croping).

Thats strange, i come home and it looks fine, but at work it was huge, i had to scroll across to even see the thing... Maybe some one edited it?

Thanks< Matt

Your screen resolution at work is different than at home, that is why it looks bigger.

For the money, I have found John Fitch to be tops. I also have had great luck with anything from Kevin Cashen. If you want to spend a little more, Roger Massey does work that is as close to perfect as can be done.
