Hello All...

Well just spent the evening last night into the wee hours of this morning at Jeff Diotte's shop flat grinding.... As a matter of fact,, I haven't went to bed yet!! yikes..I'm gonna be Crispy around noon!!

Anyhoo..

I got the hang of flat grinding tonight...

It's coming along REALLY well.. Jeff gave me some Excellent instruction and I caught on pretty good..

I can now walk my grind up at will, and we figured out what I was doing wrong..

My feed hand was holding the knife too tightly, and it was edging on me,,and not allowing me to feel the flat...

Feeling the flat is Very similar to feeling the groove on the wheel...A little different,,but similar none the less...

I also learned how to profile almost completely on the 2X72 and didn't use the spindle at all...
Also learned the checkering file, and picked one up...

So now it's off to the drawing board and design a new knife.. I've got a 6' bar of 440 thats begging to be turned into dust and hopefully something decent!!!....

Hi Eric , glad to hear you got some good one on one. You can waste a lot of good steel figuring it out on your own(ask me about it). One thing I have found, is that they can't teach you "FEEL" . I look forward to seeing some of your stuff and if they are as good as your kydex Sheath's , we're all in for a treat. Paul

Eric,
When are you going to start forging? Then you can be a real Knifemaker!:D

Hey good to hear you are still at it! Hadn't heard anything from you on knifemaking, thought you might have given it up.

Flat grinding is almost all that I do. I've done exactly what you were describing, took me quite awhile to figure that one out!

Paul...

Yaa I really needed someone to stand there and point out what I was doing wrong.. It was a HUGE help and I'm feeling more confident because of it..
I left Jeff's at 2am :) came home and ground 3 more knives... LOL
Yaa the feel is something that you need to learn.. To get a good idea of how it feels shut the grinder off and feel the flat before you begin...

As for sheaths,, Thanks much..
I know who will be doing the cow hide... :)

Troop..

Well considering Wally Hayes is less than 5 minutes away,,and he's eager to teach me,, I would say it's more than likely,, that will happen.. :)

Unfortunately I've already burned the hair on the top of my head from that forge.. :)

Yaa well I did give it up there for awhile, I just wasn't getting the hang of it...For some reason I just gave it a shot and it clicked...I'm trying to grind every day so I keep the feeling... Going to attempt a double grind hopefully soon, both hollow and flat and then move on and learn handles..
Jeff's a great one to learn handles from as his knives are some of the most comfortable knives I've held...

Lots to learn though and I'm pretty pumped about it...
I'm in No rush though...

Got my sites on another Vari 2X72 already.. :)

Thanks again Guys.. The Encouragement is Great...

Yaa I can understand that ,especially hard as Paul said if you have to learn on your own.

I'm still on the fence at to which grind I like better.. However I won't be satisfied until I master both...
