Ok, gadget freaks - help me fill 'er up....

I don't know about what else to put in it, but I'd hire a sherpa to lug the thing around for you.

I use any one of several shoulder different bags, depending on how much stuff I need to carry, so I recently got a Spec-ops Pack Rat for my essential gear, which I can easily transfer from bag to bag, or carry by itself. Right now, the Pack Rat contains the following:

-Leatherman Wave
-Leatherman Tool Adapter
-Bondus folding Allen wrench set
-Pocket Survival Pak (An excellent commercial survival kit, designed by Doug Ritter, containing Spark-Lite Firestarter & Tinder, Fox-40 Rescue Howler Survival Whistle, 2x3” Rescue Flash Signal Mirror, 20mm Survival Compass, 26” Duct Tape, 6’ Stainless Steel Utility Wire, 10’ Braided Nylon Cord, 50’ #69 Black Nylon Thread, 4 medium Fish Hooks, 2 Split Shot, 1 Snap Swivel, Heavy Duty Sewing Needle, 4 Safety Pins, 3’ Heavy Duty Aluminum Foil, #2 Pencil and Waterproof Notepaper, #22 Scalpel Blade, Survival Instructions, and Fresnel Lens Magnifier, all in a 4 oz., 4”x5” waterproof pouch, to which I’ve added a few things, such as waterproof matches, water purification tablets, and a couple of latex water bags, ie: condoms)
-Pocket Medic (commercial first aid kit, containing assorted bandages, towelettes, ointment packets, and analgesics in a 4”x4” waterproof pouch, to which I’ve added glucose tablets and a few other meds and supplies)
-25’ 550# paracord
-Small EMT shears (small, light, cheap, and cut just about anything)
-Two heavy duty trash bags
-Two ziploc bags
-Photon microlight (white & red)
-5” yellow chemical lightstick
-Bic lighter
-Moleskine notebook
-Pen/pencil/sharpie
-Blood glucose test kit
-Chapstik
-Dental floss
-Extra 1911 magazine
-Zeiss Miniquick (5x monocular)
-Small hair brush
-Fingernail clipper
-Spyderco Endura Stainless & SureFire 6P (I always carry a SureFire E2 and a folder, so these are backups that I can eliminate to lighten the kit)

Some of this stuff is admittedly a bit over the top, and I'll probably eliminate a few things to save size and weight, but I was having fun putting it together, so what the heck. :)

Things I always have in my bag:

Pens
Wallet-with emergency cash, and some quarters
Prepaid phone card
Small first aid kit-you can pick them up at the store in a small, thin plastic box, just a few bandaids and stuff

For gadgets-
Minimag  as mentioned, you need something different

Lose the dayplanner as well! Get a PDA (mine will do short voice recordings), or a phone with a planner.

MP3 player-I bought an IPOD, and I love it, though I wish it had an FM receiver in it as well. IPODs also have dayplanner software, although mine goes unused.

I've got a design for a small leather pouch - roughly 10x6x4 (plus pockets) that will hold the following:
What else do I need to make it complete?

Dan

Do you plan on selling these pouches? I have been looking for something like that. At least post a pic when you get it done.

Thanks.

Thought about a Mission Wallet too?

I put a small FAK in it, a fresnel, Ti CC-sized edged card, biniz cards.

You could use it for $$ carrying to keep coins from suffering from gravitational migration...

Also, I had a digital recorder. Hated it. Went back to micro-cassette. Easier to save important stuff. That's what I carry now, FWIW.

I bought a cool little gadget for my Ipod called Italk, that lets you use it as a voice recorder. It works pretty well, and replicates your voice memos to your computer as WAVs.

talking about drugs, why not a little pill carrier.

Just so you all know, this has worked great for me.IT works with a friction fit, but I must warn you a single grain of sand stuck in there will make it really hard to open. I keep it in my pocket with a little bit of everything, ex: excedrin, tylenol, sudafed and benadryl.
I've seen a bunch of similar items in local walgreens etc.

would be a good addition to a day pack IMHO

Hi All-

Most modern cellular telephones have capability for voice messages or for attaching audio to pictures taken with the onboard camera. No need to carry separate hardware if you're just reminding yourself to get a gallon of skim milk from the Dairy Mart.

I completely agree with Gollnick that some of these items are far beyond "survival" and sound more like "convenience" in nature. Fingernail clippers, breathmints, music, hairbrushes, etc., etc.

While I travel "somewhat heavy" on a day-to-day basis, I also recognize that many of the items that are carted along aren't required as part of disaster preparation...

Drop the minimag and get a DORCY 3AAA 1 Watt_luxeon. I got one and am very impressed. Just a tad fatter and shorter than the minimag. Much brighter and goes strong for 1.5 hours and still good out to 5 hours on one set of 3 AAAs. Not waterproof, but not expensive either. Throws well too. Get 'em at target (my target store has been cleaned out of them for weeks!)
