question that is
Why can't I find an older S30V version of Military with black plain edge blade and word "Military" printed o the blade?

What going on? so many collectors an no answer?

Ummm because it was discontinued and you will have to comb the secondary to market to find the one, of many variations that exist, to feed your desire. Other than that I don't know what you expect the collectors to tell you about why you can't find a certain knife variation that you want.

My gut reaction was to respond with they stopped printing Militray on the blade when they switched over from 440V, perhaps i'm wrong however.

when Spyderco switched over to CPM S30V they kept Military(printed on the blade)
then, due to legal ... stuff.... they switched to a "spyder" mark.
zenheretic - I keep a good eye on secondary market - bubkis:(

does someone have the copywrite for the word "Military"?

Actually "Military Model" is listed among Spyderco's trademarks. That means that another company should not name a knife the "Military Model". But, I'm sure we all know how respectful some companies are of trademarks

I don't think trademark protection would apply to other products, such as a "Military model" yoyo, etc. ;)

Trademark has nothing to do with it. There are places right here in the USA with laws against carrying weapons that have been interpreted to include a knife that claims to be Military. For some people, the word "Military" on the blade makes it a weapon. It doesn't play well in a court of law if you use this "Military weapon" in self-defense. After all, you wouldn't be carrying such a "Military weapon" if you weren't looking for trouble, right?

Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if Sal had to give up naming his knives for that reason and call them all by numbers. I would be saddened, but not surprised.

Well, I am pretty sure there were at least two reasons for removing the print from the blade:
1.) A lot of people have been requesting a sterile blade. I think complains were particularly loud when the Spyker model was released
2.) There was an incident in which the Military model was involved in a deadly stabbing incident (clearly self-defense if I would have been asked.....but I wasn't :(). I am sure having "MILITARY" boldly printed on the blade didn't help the case.

Good question, wish I had a good answer.

Best I can do is to say I've never been able to figure out why some models and variants that were made in limited supply and discontinued years ago show up damn near weekly on eBay, some a bit less regularly, while others, discontinued much more recently, seem to drop off the face of the earth shorty after their retirement. Assuming you've been looking for a while, it would seem the particular variant of the Military you seek may fit into the later category.
