Subject: Bruce Evans.......
Dan,
I'm from Columbia, S.C. & I'm brand new to knife making. I just ordered some stainless last week, only to be told
I wouldn't be able to heat treat, etc. So back to the metal store for some O-1, had to order that, too. Somehow, I found the web
site of Bruce Evans. I thought about the 440C, I'd ordered, but couldn't find any information on how to heat treat it, so I called Bruce
on Nov.3rd.,out of the blue. We talked for well over an hour; he was so interested in sharing his knowledge & was talking to someone, who
didn't know a thing about steel, ht, temper or anything else, except for what he'd read in the past week. All I know is I want to make
knives, have the time, have zero experience, but Bruce really was nice to take me under his wing, so to speak. I've just received
an email, today, from him, asking if I'd found a source for some O-1 & sending the link papes to the blademaking forums.
The reason I'm emailing is to say I found the web site of Mike Mann, nearly two years ago. I received their catalog, then filed it away
not ordering a knife, etc. This past summer I tried to access their web site, but found it "off-line". On the net I found a contributions
page for three knife makers & Mike's name was on the list. There was a contact person, listed, taking donations, but his phone
number was inactve; I sent several emails, but they were never answered, so I found Mike's catalog & called them direct. His wife
answered the phone & does most of the emailing, I guess. She's really been nice to email or call & Mike's on the mend. He's
both working in the shop & out hunting with his brother. I've ordered a knife from him, now & I've sent them some checks each month,
based on what I can afford to send. They're so appreciative, it's unbelievable. Mike & Bruce, these are good people & anyone, who's
ever needed someone's help in their lives, can imagine what it means when others step forward to give what they can. If you haven't
been there, consider yourself fortunate beyond words & give these two guys some help. Just find their sites, get their addresses &
send them whatever you can afford to send. I know Mike had no insurance, he's a self-made man, with a heart of gold. During his
career, he's given to others & it's time for the knife-making community to stand-up for Mike & for Bruce Evans.
I've been in the knife making "world" for just one week, trying to find out how, what, where, when & why & I've already met two
great guys, willing to share all their knowledge with a total stranger. I hope you print this letter, Dan; thanks, Bill...................
