flat grind verses ? What are the blade options busse offers as far as grind and which is best/strongest. I am leaning twards a thicker blade. alot of you are asking what i will be using the knife for. when I go in the wilderness in NW montana I never know what to expect. sometimes i go during hunting season so i may need to bone out a elk, If things go bad and sometimes they do you need a knife that can handle being struck on the spine with a rock, using it like a hatchet, last resort for a bear attach, flint striker, brush clearing, speer tip. I try to take only what i need so one main knife is my goal, I carry a very small bird and trout type knife for all my little jobs like cutting food and cleaning fish ecs. If I were dropped in the middle of the crap with a knife and a set of survival skills this is the knife I want ________?

Convex would be the strongest because it has the most material. Personally i have found that it chops better than a flat grind because it doesnt wedge as much. if your looking for a fat indestructible knife, look at a FFBM. Flat, Saber ground and .32 inches thick. if you have 2 hours, youtube "FFBM destruction test". those tests made me a believer in Busses and INFI.

6or7" blade is what i am looking for but i took a quick look at the videos and thats impresive.

The SARsquatch would be a close second (not thick, but strong as all get-out). I'm having mine modded slightly by NorCalblacktail soon.

There's a few of both for sale in The Exchange... http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=804

Just doing my part to help start the addiction :D

Sounds like you need the SFNO, Special Forces Natural Outlaw. It will be plenty strong enough, even at 0.22" thickness. 7" blade.

The first generation were sold on the Busse Combat site in 2004, with the usual variety of ahndle and finish options. In later years they became very desirable on the resale market and prices, even for users went rather high. Ask me how I know. Those were sabre ground.

Then about two years ago, Busse started trickling out flat gound versions of them at various shows, and people snapped them up like carzy. The fans here kept agitating for the pattern to return and Jerry obliged with a limited release (300?)of satin finished sabre grind, with magnum tiger micarta scales at a very good price, ~$425 IIRC.

Then he brought it back as the NMSFNO, with an 8" blade. So there are several versions floating around the resale market. A user can be had for under $350

If you are packing, you don't want to carry a heavy 10" Mistress. IMHO it doesn't matter what grind you get, there is almost no normal human activity you clould do that the theoretical strength difference really matters. You can hammer a 0.22" knife into a tree trunk and stand on it, how much stronger do you need?

the best grind by far is amy-0 doing the "snoopy" that's my story and i dare ANYBODY to out do that.

pics required!

Seriously, if those are your uses, I'd seriously go up to an 8" knife and go for a NMSFNO or SAR-8.

Sar-8 or NMSFNO are the top picks for hiking in the 8 inch...the FSH i think makes a close third.

so the ash 1 is .320 thick and listed for 297$ and the ash 1 le is .225 thick and lists for 497$ seams backwards to me, do people not like the thicker blades?

LE stands for limited edition - they are produced in limited numbers, with each knife numbered, and usually satin finish, which is more expensive to produce due to extra finishing. The .320 ASH 1 is a combat grade model - no numbers and a coated blade, and that's why it's cheaper.

The original pricing at $287 was the basic knife with basic canvas handles. You add $100 for shiny "satin" or $80 double cut "sand blasted" then you have handle options, magnum canvas micarta +35 or G10 magnum +55 or G10 multicolored +75 the smaller .22 version you mentioned had tiger hide handles, satin finish, and was the Limited Edition version with serial numbers on it. It was more expensive as is all LE versions.
In the BAdger attack tactical version, the opposite was the case. normal was .187 thick, while the LE was .25 thick... Just depends on the model. ON the one up now, the Bushwacker, the normal ones are 3/16 while the LE is .22 go figure? just depends on what the Boss "jerry" wants to make.
Can't go wrong with Busses.. I've been selling off all other fixed blades since I got back into the Busse's right before the ASH1 came out.

The .32 version is Combat grade, ie coated. The LE was satin with special magnum tiger micarta scales. Busse charges a good bit more for the extra work of the satin finish. Look at the difference in pricing on their current knife, the Bushwhacker Mistress:

I never like the ASH1, especially that fattie. YMMV. There is also a skinny ASH, Combat Grade, that was sold at the Busse Company Store.

Many folk here are chubby chasers.

Some of us, like resin and myself, don't like overly fat knives, especially knowing that INFI is plenty tough to be amazingly functional in a 1/4 inch thick blade. The thickest INFI I own is my FSH at .275, and honestly, I wish it was thinner.

I only own one knife that's pushing that third of an inch thick territory, and it's the Regulator from Scrap Yard, but it's got a long tapering grind on the point that thins the blade out significantly, making it perform very differently from a typical .33in thick knife.
