OK I have got some good news.. And I have got some bad news.....

Gee, like the above poster, I wonder where all the high rollers that buy new tactical folders by the half dozen went to

I get myself a new pocket knife when I really wear one out; which takes 3-10 years depending on what I am doing at the time. I would have subscribed, but am on my employer's PC at work goofing off. But I appreciate the effort Mike!!!

The subscription money is water under the bridge. Just consider it a small donation to the cause.

Thanks for all your time and effort!

I agree with all who posted above. Keep my money also(an email has been sent). Some of us thought it was a great idea.

Mike,

What a shame. I thought the first issue was very good. Any way, keep my money -- the email has been sent.

Just keep my money as well..., I get lots more from this site than the cost of that subscription....

Mike, Spark, et al,

Keep the subscription, I hope the small contribution will assist in the aggregate.
Firstly you are to be commended for not only bringing this forum alive, but also for your considered response when things don't turn out the way you had hoped/planned. Some of us are 'part-timers' here at the forum but support you none the less. I've 'met' many fine folks thru bf and consider it a privledge and pleasure to 'mingle'. Thanks again.

Keep it, Mike, as Jim pointed out, it's a great cause.

Besides, if I went to four movies at $7.50 a pop, I would've spent, what, 8-10 hours sittin on my ass in front of a big screen. I've spent way more time sitting behind this small screen here and at home.

Mike, e-mail on the way.

Crap, I used my refund to buy another knife from Mike's sale. Now you guys have given me guilt feelings by turning your subscriptions back. More power to you. Sorry, Mike. I moved too fast.

Ah hell, keep my subscription/donation. I figure this place has saved me more money via the info I receive (not to mention countless hours of entertainment value - sad as that may be). Best of luck, Mike.

WOW!

Yesterday, when I was talking over my plan with Lori and Spark, we thought that many of you would just donate to the cause. We had no clue that so many of you would and/or how much this site meant to you guys. Thanks!

It has me thinking that maybe I should look at this place from a different perspective.

What I mean is that this site is and will always be FREE. I also do not want to look for a hand out as it is just simply not my style, but the past 6 months have made me think otherwise about the site.

I have also visited many UBB sites which are set up like ours. Not knife sites but other sites entirely.
Here is a link so you guys can find more sites like ours in other subject material. www.ultimatebb.com/home/examples.shtml

A vast majority those sites started with a goal in mind but then after a few months they simply lost interest or the site becomes a bigger burden than they had planned for.

I have yet to reach that point, but I can see that if this place starts costing me much more than the $1,500 or so that it does now per month, that I might have to dump it or something worse like sell it!

This site will remain FREE, and I do not want anyone to ever feel the pressure that they must donate or anything else. To keep this site free, I must make some changes that will be somewhat transparent to the members here. I have a game plan that I will further investigate over the next few weeks or so.

We have basically tried damn near everything to keep this site free. The auction, raffle, the Blue Native and Sifu and other ideas you have all witnessed turned out to be flashes in the pan. The ad dollars are just not there either.

Looks for some new ideas I have over the next few weeks. If you have any ideas, by all means, let us know in our suggestion forum. (it is in the help section)

Don't panic or anything as the ship is not sinking. In fact, if my new plans work we will be on the cruise of a lifetime!

Stay Tuned

Congratulations Mike, I haven't seen this reaction before. I think that it means that you have provided a very special service and established a very special relationship with a very special clientel. Back 10 years ago when I had to close down a small paper publication I don't recall anyone who passed up a refund. Our publication had been providing a special service to a closely affiliated clientel for about 50 years. I wrote out something like 450 prorated refund checks for amounts as low as $2.50. Maybe 5 people said "keep the change".

Now if you can just figure a way to make the forums pay for themselves--the big question of the internet. Maybe you could affiliate yourself with one of the big portals, something with a soul, like Yahoo.

You can keep my money too. $30 is a bargain for the amount of knowledge and enjoyment that I have gained since finding these forums.

TY and long live the forums.

Mike,

I'm amazed that so few ponied up. The knowledge of knives, metallurgy, and sharpening alone that I have gained from the forum are worth the $30. I'll confirm via email.

Mike, Spark, EtAll

E-mail on the way to confirm you keeping the $30 as a donation.

I cannot say any more or any better than has already been said. This place has given me a whole new way to spend even greater amounts of my money.

I have also learned things that would of cost lots more if I learned them at the "school of hard knocks".

Sorry the mag idea didn't work as we all hoped.

We are lucky to have this forum. I realize it's not much but please keep my subscription fee. The amount of information I have picked up here in the short time I have been posting has been incredible. The people that post here are, in huge majority, class acts and amazingly informative. So, I hope whatever plans you implement are successful. This is too well-run and too good of a thing to lose.
I had never even heard of a vampire gerbil until I came here. Knowledge like that is priceless.
