OK....I think I'm done with Kershaw now

I really, really, REALLY wanted to love the Cyclone. I did. If some of you remember, I got a Cyclone for xmas, but the torsion bar was messed up so the speedsafe mechanism didn't work. It made a loud SNAP every time you tried to close the blade. It was produced in June of 2006 - some of you mentioned that the torsion bar was redesigned in '07 due to a flaw that caused the snapping problem, so I did what many of you recommended...I wrote Kershaw a letter and sent the knife back to them via UPS at my own expense, asking them to honor their warranty and either repair or replace the knife.

Today, I was thrilled to get a package from them. I opened it up, and there was a replacement Cyclone inside. It was a little different from the first one (the blade was black but the thumb studs were silver, and the serrations were much different), but it appeared to be new, and thats what I had asked for. I was very satisfied, once again, UNTIL I TRIED TO USE THE DAMN SPEEDSAFE MECHANISM.

The torsion bar doesn't even have enough juice to open the blade all the way, and guess what? Upon closing the blade, after it sat for maybe 3 or 4 seconds fully closed with the speedsafe engaged...SNAP. The damn thing snapped again, and now it won't engage. This time it's different, though...after that initial snap, it hasn't snapped again, but it's making a very mild clicking right as you begin to close the blade, as though the torsion bar and actuator bar just aren't meshing correctly.

Guys, either I'm the most unlucky person in the history of Kershaw Knives, or many more of these funky Cyclones are floating out there than you all realize. I'm not stupid when it comes to mechanical things. I'm not "breaking" these knives right out of the box. But you know what? I'm done with this crap, unfortunately. I HATE having a negative attitude like that, especially about a product that I desparately wanted to love based on all of the positive feedback I've read on here...but there is no reason for this. The replacement knife is only a couple months newer, too...November of 06 as opposed to June. If thats the best that Kershaw can do, knowing full well about the problems that I had with the first one, then I'll spend my money elsewhere.

BS. Total BS. :mad: :thumbdn::thumbdn::thumbdn::mad:

Sorry to hear about your luck. These things happen sometimes. I wish you luck in your future knife adventures. If you ever see a Kershaw that you like come on back in and we will do all we can to get you the best info we can.

I know they do, and I know that Kershaw makes a good product based on all of the happy customers here. I just wanted to be one of them, dammit! :(

Thanks for the kind words though. Perhaps my luck will change one day.

they still have humans there... you should send it back one more time. I bet they change your mind ;)

one more time... make me eat my words. If they don't, I'll buy it from you.

yeah, that is an offer. go for it. oh, just my .02, try a dif kershaw than the cyclone. that one may be a better fit for you.

That's almost as awesome as Thomas's guess-my-scotch giveaway!

I'd take him up on it... for however much of your time, you either get a new knife (and a really good one, from what I've heard... I have the ZDP Leek, so I'm set) or your initial investment returned.

you could play it safe and get flipper model instead like a junkyardog2 or a lahar. just as good as an assisted opener really.

Eventho I love all of MY Cyclones (I have 4 of 'em), I was also going to suggest getting a "manual flipper model". A couple days ago I received a Kershaw Groove from OregonEdge (Thanks, again!...), and I've really found it to be a hard folder to put down. It has no torsion bar, so it's not an AO, but it flips open VERY smoothly, and quickly. I'm actually starting to think that this Groove might edge-out the Cyclone as my favorite Kershaw folder...(The ZT 0200 is STILL my all-time favorite folder.).

Sorry to hear about your Cyclone. My buddy has had one over a year now with no problems, and he uses it daily. I've had mine now for a couple of months now, with no problems, and I'm one of those people that open and close my knife continuously while watching TV. Mine has a SEP 06 BOD.

I know it's not the same model, but I've had nary a problem with any of my Leeks either. I have total confidence in all of my AO Kershaws.

I'd give the good folks at Kershaw one more chance to make it right, even without Oregonedge's generous offer. Good luck, and let us know how things turn out.

Convert,

If you would like, send me an email with your shipping adress and I will send you a prepaid package to send the Cyclone back. I will either personally fix the problem with your knife, or replace it with different model of the same value. We apologize for the less than satisfactory service.

It doesn't get any better than that...
BTW...The Groove is about the same price as the Cyclone.;).

Yes, what Tim said!! Do it Covert. I would love to see you become one of the many Kershaw lovers!!;)

Everyone drops the ball once in a while - this appears to be a drop in the cowpie situation. K'shaw has made it clear they'll work with you on this to make it right..Personally - I admit that every time I try something else - I keep coming back to the speed-safe - not so much for the first word -but because this design safetly locks the tool far more reliabily /consistentlythan I can. I also feel the hand/arm wave required to flip open some of their other knives is less than discrete. While someone has to be pretty close to see me open a speed-safe -they can see me waving a knife around from across the room with the "flippers". This isn't a case of legal rights or even moral rights - it's a case of wanting a usefull knife to use as a tool and not wanting to scare/upset the customers ( the folks who buy me gas, house and feed me).
Kershaw has a track record of makin it right - let 'em do it for you.

Covert, if you want to "love" Kershaw here's your chance. Tim just gave you an offer you can't refuse. Personally fix your knife or a knife of equal value, of your choice! Decisions, :eek:decisions.

That offer alone is a reason to love Kershaw!!;)

Sorry to hear about your experience. I have never owned a Cyclone, but i had a minor issue with a ZT folder(regarding a piece of metal missing in the thumb ramp area that made it very uncomfortable) which i sent back for repair. I was promptly sent a full replacement. Kershaw has great customer service, and with an offer like the one Tim just presented, i would definitely give them another chance. ....just my .02:cool:

Wow, I leave for the night and get TWO outstanding replacement offers within 12 hours.

Tim, I will take you up on this, give me a minute to send you the e-mail with my address. I'm really, sincerely hoping that the third time is a charm. I like this knife so much, but two strike-outs is a bit frustrating, especially coming from the manufacturer.

Thank you again for offering your assistance, Tim.

Service. This is the reason 95% of my knife purchases last year were Kershaw.
This year I'm at 100%.

Is this a common problem with this model? Do not get me wrong I am a huge Kershaw fan and in fact all my forseable future folder purchases will be ZTs or Kershaw. However if this is a common problem with this model I will just get the R.A.M. when it comes out and another JYD2 (I gave the other to my son) instead of the R.A.M. and Cyclone. I hope it is not because the Cyclone has some of the best ergos for me of any folder I have ever held.

If a model shows signs of a "common problem", adjustments are made at the factory to correct it. This is not a common occurrence with the Cyclone's.
