I have been $arting around with this blade all day and have reached an impass.
This is my first attempt at a big Frontier style Bowie (Take that with a big grain of Salt:p) and am stumped for a handle Guard combo that FITS the style! I will be using plum brown and a light sanding to age this blade.

I have an Elk Crown fitted Nobody likes it at all.
Combined with an "C" guard, they liked that even less. Yuk...
As much as I hate to admit it they IE:Family are usually right.

I am considering a Mortised tang coffin style handle with a straight guard that reflects the Coffin style. Maybe bend the ends...

So PLEASE if you have some constructive advice on how to salvage this blade Chime in:D
Thanks

HMMMM.....well for what it's worth Robert, I think it would look great with a framed handle and the butt turned down and rounded (Like an old bayonett). That thing is just screaming for a figured piece of Walnut or Rosewood.

Beautiful blade. I can't wait to see it finished.

I'd do a simple heavy oval guard.

I'd like to see what it looked like with that elk
on it? yes oval, simple but nice.

You have Mail:D
Here is a picture that you guys might like with this style of Blade..
Jim Batson did this one..Sorry for the bad scan..You can see the picture in the new KI that just came out,in the article about Jim Batson...

Coffin handle with snowman guard?
Or...
Plow handle with simple oval guard?

You're off to a great start, sleep on it ;)

Ebbtide,
I like simple clean lines in my stuff.
I got the Oval guard alright, but here is a chance to show my ignorance!
What does a Snowman guard or Plow Handle look like?

Robert,
That's a great looking blade
I agree with George about an "S" guard or maybe even a stylized
"D" guard.
Please excuse me modifying your picture.

That would make a fine Confederate bowie.

My thoughts are a nickel silver S guard and a framed coke bottle ebony handle. Dont forget some nickel silver pins. Whatever you decide be sure to post it.

I'll have to chime in here in favor of the "S" guard also, though I'm thinking it should be steel. It fits the style of the blade. I also think the stag in combination with the "S" guard would be fine as well as any nicely figured wood.

It's a really nice blade by the way, great transition line between the hardened portion and back! I'm dying to try my hand at a big forged bowie soon also, maybe with cast bronze fittings.

Snowman guard?
Think of the ace of clubs on the top and bottom of a pointy oval guard. It looks like a snowman to me ;) A classic look :)
The plow handle is the basic shape of a stag crown handle, kinda droops down...like a plow handle, but not as far as a pistol grip.
A fellow named Buckner had some plow handle bowies in Blade mag. a couple of issues ago.
And if anyone knows the proper names, feel free to learn me!

robert, you didn't like my idea?:D the jest was, that for me. i ask and then at 3am i roll over in bed and it comes to me what to do!
