You keep saying that there'll be one, but not quite yet. Well it's been a really long time, and I still haven't seen the folder. I haven't seen a pic of a prototype. If there is an old thread I missed please point me to it. Otherwise, Where the Hell is it?

Please note, in the above post I'm not trying to be rude, I'm just really excited about a Busse INFI folder and I want to buy one.

Medusa,
Here is an old thread where Jerry "cleared" up some things for me

I hope it is helpful, BTW, I'm waiting for the folder also. http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum39/HTML/001163.html

I just got on the waiting list

. I can harldy wait. From my understanding it should be released around August/September-or maybe I heard wrong. Patience is a virtue, at least that is what my Mom always told me.

By the way which one's Pink?

Make that another person who's waiting for the folder and wanting more info about it.

A lot of people are waiting for the folder, personally I would not mind the wait, even another year or two -if- the knife comes out with a strong *and* stable lock. You don't want a folder like this now do you :

butter-billy knif

Another gem from Billythetran who also came up with an excellent sig if I ever saw one :

Cliff,

You and your buddy Billythetran may just be onto something. How about a giant butterfly knife featuring something like a Steelheart II blade. For strength we could use something like solid 3/8" steel handle pins and micarta over steel handles.

It certainly wouldn't be intended for pocket carry. But it would be easier to carry in a sheath or backpack than a fixed bladed steel heart II; more compact/safer since the edge is shielded by the steel handle(and probably just about as strong).

The handle would be a couple of inches too long when opened, but, if configured correctly it should be comfortable and offer better leverage for chopping. The extra handle length could be used to increase the effective blade length to almost BM proportions.

What do you think?

There ya go! Now that's how you step into someones living room and demand service.

They do have a very strong and robust lock, however personally I have never cared for the ergonomics nor handle security. However the knife you describe would certainly top the list of mega-folders and would make an excellent lawn dart.

Cliff,

The ergonomics have been bad, because the handle design has been weak. Most of these knives feature nothing more sophisticated than two U-shaped piece of steel for a handle. With all of the focus on locks it would be interesting to drag this old pattern back to the drawing board to see what develops.

August or September?

I suppose that means "of next year".

I know great knives are worth waiting for, but some of these waits are pretty ridiculous. I've got Busse money still out from last year and still no knife. (Badger-E). I don't think I'd really care if the money wasn't up front.

El Aurence,

I'm really surpised you have had to wait that long. I think you should give Busse Combat a call (their number is at www.bussecombat.com ) and they should be able to tell you how much longer, or if it's ready to ship, etc. based on your order number. Most of the knives from Busse Combat ship in about 2 or 3 weeks, I've heard. Bad luck on you wait time.

With a bali-song though you have the problem of making the handles fit together on both sides because of the way they sit when open and closed. Can you make a comfortable and secure grip with this restriction - I don't know.

I personally would prefer something like the lock P.J. Turner uses on the Uluchet. It is very stable and strong. The downside is that it does not open nor close with the same ease as most folders. But I would rather have a lock that once locked stayed lock rather than one which is easy to manipulate.

I will be interesting to see what comes out of Busse Combat.

El Aurence,

Please check your e-mail and contact me directly as I am unaware of this situation.

Cliff,

Perhaps we can do something like this:

I don't realy have the right tools to draw this so let me describe what I have sketched above.

The blade rides on 4 heavy pins (red circles)along 4 machined slots (green bars). There are two slots (left and right) within the top half of the handle, and two more in the bottom half. The bottom and top half of the handle are held in place by two latch points (blue) against the pressure of 4 springs (black circle). Both latch points are activated by a latch lever located on the top half of the handle.

To use the knife start with the knife in a basic saber grip and pull the latch back with your thumb. This disengages the handle latch and causes the top and bottom halfs to separate thus bringing the slots to the blade travel position.

Now point or flick the knife downward to drive the blade forward along the track. Once the blade reaches a fully extended position squeeze the handle to a fully closed position. The top latch will snap forward to engage and hold both halfs of the handle firmly together.

Please note that I have only illustrated the position of the travel slot. There is plenty of space around the channels to build an insulated and ergonomic handle.

The end result works a little like a German WWII paratroop gravity knife (the real knife not the lazy tong thing) although this one cannot be confused with a gravity knife, and will probably carry a proportunately bigger blade in a more comfortable handle.

So there you have it. A large folding blade with 4 solid pins in place of the standard pivot pin. So who wants to build this beast?

N2S - Now that looks like an excellent design. If Busse doesn't want to build it, you should try to have someone do it.

Medusaoblongata,

I think it would make an excellent addition to Busse line. It would be great to go with Infi steel. Maybe we can call it a "Quad lock" since the four pins are individually locked in place. It looks like you would actually have to break two consecutive pins before you totally disabled the knife. A big plus if you are actually using the knife for survival.

I'll leave it here for a few, and then post it under the Customs Forum to see if anyone wants to do it.

Having heard Jerry described as someone of enormous energy, enthusiasm, talent, and a number of projects, I think I understand. I never quite seem to get any of my multitude of home projects done "on time." I won't hold my breath while awaiting the folder. I'll just be very interested to see it when it arrives.

Does that sound about right, Jerry?

Cool design, N2S.

What if you were to double up on the number of heavy pins (i.e. 4 on each side of the blade, in sort of a square configuration), as well as double up on the number of short perpendicular slots at each end of the handle. Seems like it would be just as easy to engineer, would make the blade move more smoothly through the handle, and would make for a more secure lockup once deployed. Just a thought that might help improve an already excellent idea.
