Why, oh WHY in the name of Jimmy Bowie do so many knives have the butt end with the longer part on the TOP? Where it will dig IN to the heel of the hand if you push on the handle with the heel of your hand.

EVERY time I pick up one that tapers INTO the hand with the longer surface on the FINGER side, I say....mmmmmm ..... COMFY!!

Yet so MANY are the other way. Even the classic Loveless design has that ole heel digger on it.

Opinions?

What's with all the folders who have the bolster designed like a lawn edger?

Jeez, SMOOTH is what works in POCKETS.

But nooooooooooooooo they gotta put catchy, grabby, wavy, sharpy, flared, pocket shredders on the bolster end.

Maybe they do it so that it will dig into the palm of your hand. :) If you assume that you aren't going to apply a lot of pressure in that position that angle makes that butt dig into your hand rather than sliding off.

Actually I assume they give no thought to puting your hand there. They just think it looks cool that way. My pet peeve is handles with square corners and angular hardware that dig into your hand with almost any varient grip.

That wasn't rabies. His PAW was just sore from poorly designed KNIVES!!!

I HAD wondered why it was his feet that were foaming...

You're a man now t1mpani, you're a man now. ;)

Thank you, though it's similarity to what I said to him not long before brings a tear to my eye:
"That'll do, peeve, that'll do." :(

Wow.Jim Bowie.A dog with rabiies that had to be put down and pet peeves all in one thread. :D

Lavan, I don't know if it is because it's so late, or if I'm just so much more drunk than I think I am. But could you post a pic of the sort of thing you're talking about? This makes little sense to me right now, and I really want to know what we're talking about.

I agree, knifeclerk. It's not clear to me what the original issue was, and I'm not consuming any recreational beverages (at least, not at the moment :) )...

Neither looks like it would fail to dig. A point on top or a point on the bottom, youre still pushing it into the heel of your hand, right?

I think most makers use their own personal preference since a knife will be held 99% of the time it its standard grip. If a maker designs something that 99% of the time feels great, that 1% of the time when someone want to be able to twirl it on their thumb while doing a handstand doesnt seem as much a big deal. If you are using a palm push enough that these type knives bother you, you should either have a custom made handle with a flared ball at the end, or youre looking for an awl rather than a knife, but thats just my opinion.

Aw, yer AWL wet! :D

Now just lookee at da bottom nife in da illustration. Don't it look COMFY?
Yah. Makes ya go "ooooooohhhhh" jus lookin at it. An when ya reach up ta cut sumpin (assoomin dat you is a reglar knife guy wot neffer gits all callused frum bildin shelters in da woods) it doesn't dig into your soft, genteel palm that you use for OTHER things.

So, in summation gentlemen, I submit that a knife handle should be curvy an ergonomically similar to a hogleg Colt.

I rest my case.

:p

hmm - OK, I think I get the point of the issue, finally. Never saw it as an issue, though.

Could be I haven't handled enough different knives to notice...but I would also submit that the most comfortable knife I've ever used is a Spyderco Paramilitary, which has the top end longer than the bottom (can't supply a pic, but easily enough found on the web).

Maybe it's because I've never used a knife often enough in the way that you are (i.e. in such a way that the top would dig into my hand), if I'm getting this correctly ?

...or, maybe my paws (and so therefore, as the female-inspired stereotypes would have it, other appendages also) are too small :D

it is a public relations scam by pants manufacturers to get knife carriers to replace their pants more often. i think knife manufacturers get 1% from pants sales....
