WE has a selection of knives in a very affordable price range. The machinery and bearings matched with ceramic ball detents to go with slick designs make for a pleasing knife to work with. BUT they are still made in China and that can not be ignored. If the features they offer were done here in America the prices of these knives would be double or even triple in cost. I am left wondering what corners have they cut to drive cost down? Subpar heat treating? Lesser quality steel? I dont know but it seems sketchy to me. Im a firm believer in if its too good to be true then it is. I mean why buy a 500+ hundred dollar knife if WE is giving you all the features in a $200--$300 knife? Sorry but something seems off.

How many WE threads do we need to have in parallel? Do not we already have a very long one running currently?

You are right. My apologies. Mods shut this one down and i will just post this in the current thread.

Again, 20 new threads from you in 18 days....that can be ineffective. Maybe its time to read instead of open? Just a suggestion. It may yield better information for you.

That's why everything is made in China these days. It's not because we want to support another country's economy. It's because they can make things more cheaply. The problem is greed and money hungry corporations outsource for the absolute cheapest price possible and consumers demand the lowest price because they want something with chrome plated plastic that looks good for a few years instead of something quality made that lasts but costs more.

If you pay for high quality China can make it and they can still produce it cheaper for the same reasons they can produce cheap products cheaper.

My favorite knife at this time is a knife made in China though by a different company - a Reate Horizon D CF. I don't like WE designs very much or I might own a few.

Ill answer the actual question with a twofer response.

1. China is utilized because they can manufacture products cheaper than other places while maintaining quality. It has nothing to do with corner cutting. Its economics. Cheaper labor, cheaper cost of operations, less restrictions for better or worse and they have decades of experience making knives. If they were to offer their products at the same price as USA produced knives a thread would likely have been made complaining about it. To be honest im quite surprised that a thread about being surprised chinese products are cheaper as its a well known fact. Lack of chinese quality has always been because no one commissioned them to do anything better. Most of the time to protect interests in american manufacturing and to create the illusion they cant make quality products. There really is no money to be made in them improperly heat treating a blade.

2. American products, especially knives have an artificially inflated price. The cost of raw materials has gone down. The designs have got simpler and prices keep going up. Its a bubble that imho is gonna burst at some point. Especially if china keeps killing it like they have been.

Agreed. There are reasons why it's cheaper in China aside from inflated costs of American made products, though. Cheaper energy, lower environmental quality standards, trade policies that benefit Chinese manufacturing, massive manufacturing subsidies, lower cost of living equaling lower necessary wages, lower taxes, etc

And the icing on the cake is American companies seeking the absolute highest profit possible without a lot of desire to increase productivity. With all of that together China will continue to dominate and with logical reasons why.
