Ok, Now I am totally confused about grinds

Perhaps this is too simple a question to ask but is there a standard primary grind and a standard edge grind on Busse knives or have they evolved over time or does it just depend on the model.

My NMSFNO LE has what I believe is a full convex grind. The blade goes from spine to edge in one continuous arc until it reaches a point. My SAR4 LE and HG55 LE also seems to have the same geometry.

My HODD SFNOLE has a saber cut. It starts flat at the spine to about the 1/3 mark then tapers into a V, and then tapers again at the edge. Thus, 3 distinct surface areas.

What are CG knives? Do they convex from the spine and then end in a V edge? Or are they V from the spine and end in a convex edge? Or are they convex which then evolves into a second convex?

Thanks in advance for your pearls of swine wisdom.

I don't have much if any swine wisdom as you call it.:p But each model is different.

And CG knives are such because they are typically not made in limited quantities. And it's my impression that Busse dumbs down the production costs to provide us with a less expensive alternative to an LE.:D A CG or LE isn't neccessarily defined by it's grinds, but sometimes it's the grind type in conjunction with the finish that make up either a CG or LE.

Edit to ask: Not to be a smart azz... you do know CG stands for Combat Grade, right? Re-reading through your post I found it hard to tell.:D

My nmsfno CG was a full convex grind, but a standard V edge. That is all I can attest to.

Wait for the janitor to chime in. If you're lucky, you'll get Garth. He's knows the most. :D

The grind varies from knife to knife.

CG will typically be coated and will have fewer bells and whistle; also a better price point.

LE's are typically Satin with Tigerhide (canvas or more recently linen) micarta and more attention to fine details, they are also numbered.

Busse's generally come either Full Flat Ground, Sabre Ground or Full Convex. The only hollow ground blades I've seen have been the Off Duty Super-Fatty-Rail-Road-Spike Blades. The CG versions of full convex blades generally have a secondary bevel that can be easily stropped out (think; NMSFNO the SE SAR4).

You do mean the HEAVY duty, correct? ;)

Grinds are typically different depending on the knife. It wasn't until the NMSFNO or just prior that we started to see convex edges/blades coming from the BC more frequently. Before that you had full-flat grinds, and sabre grinds with mostly v-edges, and some asymmetrical.

Yeah, it's obvious you don't know much about grinding, the CNC mill does all the work. :p

I wish I had a cnc mill, I bid on one last week,, came up a little short,, a nice Fadal VCM, that would have cut my work down a lot,, then I could just drink scotch all day,,,

No, I drink beer when I grind,, still have not reached the upper limits of drunken knife making,, a cnc and I could reach the pinnacle..

I am still grasshoppa,,,

No, I meant the Off Duties that were/are over 1/3 of an inch thick and hollow ground. The Heavy Duties were only 1/5 of an inch thick. ;) I don't know if they were flat or hollow ground--send me yours and I'll check her out!

Oh, man...you're absolutely correct. I got the names switched up. Yes...that satin/snake OD is Soooooo beautiful with the deep hollow grind.
