Ok, ok, now I can see the hype about the Spanto Blade

I must admit, I had one early on and could never really "love" it. I had sort of written off the Spanto as a blade shape for me. I sold my first one and moved on to Slicer blades. Well recently I came across a decent deal on a sandblasted Ti XM-18 3.5 with a Spanto. I thought, "maybe I will give it another shot." Needless to say, I'm glad I did. I'm sure in large part this is due to my sharpening skills improving since my last Spanto. They are a design that, when really sharp, seem awesome. My first one wasn't all that sharp, and no doubt that contributed to my not falling in love with it. I got my new one in today and spent about 5 minute on a diamond flat stone. Got it POPPIN' sharp. I can now really see the affinity for this design. Glad I gave the Spanto another go! :)

Has anyone else had that happen? Did you like or not like a design, only to grow to like it later? Share your experiences.

I find when I carry each grind every 2 days or so...(my edc rotation) I think to myself that this one is my favorite, then 2 days later, no this one is my favorite.

They're all my favorite!!

The spanto is so iconic. The wharnie is just wicked looking. And the slicer is a pretty sweet grind. Hence my dilemma :)

Lol! Right?! "This one is my favorite! Well, for today anyway.." :o

They are all great grinds. Each useful and beautiful in their own unique way. I was put into a position recently where I had to sell off my whole herd. I told myself that I'll be damned if I'm going to be without a hinderer so I allowed myself to keep one. So my dilemma was fieldtac, FXM, slicer, spanto, or wharnie. It was a gut wrenching and very difficult decision for me. I love each knife for different reasons. The fieldtac is just a scary monster of a knife but too big to edc. The FXM with a satin spanto blade is just so beautiful. It is my favorite knife that I've ever owned but a fixed blade isn't as easy to carry as a folder. So they were out of the equation. The spanto is classic hinderer, the wharnie is so bad ass and cool I just love it. For me the slicer is the most useful grind even though I honestly like the look of the spanto and the wharnie better. I know it's going to be at least a year before I get another hinderer so it came down to the one that is the most useful to me as an edc, The slicer. It was a tough decision and I flip flopped several times. Ultimately a knife is a tool and the slicer was the right tool for the job in most cases for me:) although I will be getting each blade style again down the road without a doubt!!! Hinderers are cool.

I totally get that!! I was a Slicer guy. That, and I wasn't the worlds biggest S35VN fan. My Slicer is Duratech 20CV. I had the chance to talk to Rick at SHOT Show about the various steels he has used. Directly from Rick he told me "S35VN is a darn nice steel. Use it hard and give it a chance." Well, I don't need to get hit in the head to know that when Rick says steel is GTG, it must be. Soooo, my favorite for today is my Spanto in S35VN. :)

Haha! Yes the "fav of the day" is what we should call it :)

It's all just time... If you don't think you like a hinderer as much, all the bug needs is time, cause eventually you're going to like/love it!!!

Glad you like the Spanto now Vegas

It's kinda like having a pistol in .45acp, a .22lr rifle, and a 12 gauge shotgun. If you're gonna own firearms, you gotta have all three! I couldn't sell off any XM's at this point. I am actually hoping for a new run of 3" XM's, or maybe we'll get a crack at the new model later this year!

My first two xm's were spanto's, and I loved them. I really didn't like the physical appearance of the slicer grind as much, but when I got a slicer XM-24 I fell in love. So I had to have a thinner blade slicer, so I got a 3.5 one and in my opinion it's the perfect Edc blade style. Of course, I haven't tried the wharnie yet, which is probably freaking sweet. I'd love to try one!

But back to spanto's, I agree; they're the "Hinderer signature" grind so to speak. I'd like to have a XM-24 spanto. I'm sure that thing could conquer any task life could throw at ya!

They can, for sure. I have one here, for when I need a beast of a knife. Most of the time I carry a 3.5" slicer, sometimes a 3.5" Spanto.

Great discussion, it is interesting to hear why each grind strikes a chord with each of us. Jensen your story reads like one of those survival questions, " okay you only can bring one item with you on a deserted island, tell us what it would be and why?) love how you methodically deduce the answer, good rationale! Someday, someday.

Haha! I just love this slicer so it was a good choice. I kept a ti scale,a skull filler tab, and a crusader cross handle nut for it. No regrets. I do miss the others but this one will be a great companion until I can scrape up enough for my next XM. Oh man! What will I pick when that time comes!!! Decisions decisions. :)

Haha! That would be a great choice. The gears are spinning over here like crazy! Got my slicer today, and several people at work love the ergos of an XM. Too bad they can't have mine! Mwahaha...

I have one of each (Spanto, Slicer, Wharnie)... and I honestly cannot decide which I like better anymore. Seems whichever is in my pocket convinces me it's the king... until one of the others gets it turn, then it's the one! :D Needless to say... they're all great.

Yes I have to agree on the sharpening they don't come that sharp and the edge is a bit course of a grind. One I got would not cut anything but another friend got was a bit better but they all need sharpening and polishing out of the box at this level of knife. for me the Slicer I cut a lot of boxes with it and the spanto is just to thick, but the spanto looks better and has a better story. One day I will own both and a warcliff. I want to try the warcliff I think the point a little more forward is better for cutting things I just wish there was a little arc in his blade design.

Don't kill me but I love the Chris reeves warlcliff design. Not the same knife at all though.

I re profiled my spanto to 20 dps, made a big difference!

My spanto is the only one I've sharpened as well. I reprofiled to 23 deg per side so as not to increase the angle too much. The slicer and the wharnie came really sharp from the ranch. Don't plan on sharpening them for a while.

I love the slicer and the wharnie, but the spanto is a sledgehammer! Definitely the tough guy grind!
