OK Sharpening Gurus .....

If you have the patience for it, I would go for something like 10 deg. per side and maybe blend the edgebevel into the bladebevel by slightly convexing (after you rough in the new edge). For something like 5 deg or primary blade bevel to zero edge I would lack the patience. Nor do I think it is necessary to slice really well. Even though, the lower the angle the better the slicing ability.

I ground mine at ~10-12 and just took it down to full by working on it a little every time I reset the edge. I just put in 1-2 minutes of work with a x-coarse hone, it didn't take many sessions.

Is it necessary to go this far, no, it also makes a lot less of a difference to go from 10 to 5 than it did to go from 20+ to ten. The cosmetics are also totally scuttled at the low angles as well.

That being said if you want the highest degree of cutting ability, edge retention, and ease of sharpening, this is the way to shape the edge.

Here are some links if you can't find the instructions that came with you sharpener. Remember if it was a razor they would have called it a razor instead of a knife. Profile at 30 total (15 side) and sharpen at 40 and it should not need resharpening for a long time.

Just for the record, I do know how to use the tools I have and do have some eperience with sharpening things, (including axes). I was simply asking for opinions, hopefully from people who have owned a Sebenza and maybe reprofiled it or have similar experience with a similar knife.

I'm relatively happy with the way it works from the factory but I want to experiment a little and see where it goes.

I have read any number of sharpening articles and FAQs.

Yes, thanks Metal, I think this is the best approach, I'm not in any hurry to make drastic changes so dropping it a degree or three each time sounds likle a plan.

Gajinoz, did you reprofile your sebenza ? How ends the story ?

I’m asking that, because I’m in the process of reprofiling my small sebenza.

My goal is to reprofile it to 10º with the apex edgepro and make a 15º microbevel with the sharpmaker.

I think the thumbstud could be a problem (because is “over” 10º…)

Well, after all that, I never got round to it! :rolleyes:

I did do a bit of work on the SnG and I got that down to about 12 a side and then put a 15 a side finish on it. Cuts really well now and the edge seems to be holding up nicely to whatever I throw at it.

I certainly plan to do something with the Sebbie but other things have taken up my attention lately. I'll report when I've done something.
