during the 25th celbration I recived a lot of encouragement and a boot up the wazoo
to write a book on the "folding hunter" ..
have thought of it for years now and have a bit already prepped
and a lot of ideas for it ...
but ... gee .. it come to me that there might.
well .. I wandered why would some one read or buy a book on the 110
it would not be a large or thick book ...
it is jest on the one ten and its related model family
so I thought I would ask here
what would you like to read or see in a book on the folding hunter?
you may post here or send a email to
a334dave at yahoo dot com
or a email through the forum
I may contact you to ask questions on your thoughts

note I am jest asking as ... well ...
a way to see how I might be sure to cover every thing that any one would want to know about a folding hunter
legal stuff highlight to read ...
this is jest suggestions any one may voice
Assume I have already thought of what you might suggest but might not decided yet to include it !
I may or may not use any ideas you suggest in/for the book
any ideas are to be considered ways I might go evolve the book
to be sure it will appeal to YOU
any thing that may show up in the book that resembles any ideas here is
ONLY a resemblance ... any suggestions that post here are considered to be
freely given and not subject to any payment of any kind
any resemblance to any other book is purely coincidence -
I will be posting in this forum contests for material that may be used also

That is GREAT news!! :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

I will think more about your question later, but for now I'll just say write about some of the history that you know about it.

Remember the day we sat for four or five hours?? I wasn't ready to leave yet, but had to get moving again. I would have love to sit and listen to more of the history lesson you were giving me on the 110. :)

I'd buy at least two of them. Ha!!

Another thought came to mind. Maybe we should take up a collection now to pay the poor guy that will be responsible for proof reading this new book written by you.

He'll be looking for a new line of work after this job. :D

My take on the history of antique collectable books, particularly pottery, someone masses a huge collection, writes a book/value guide, and then cashes in. Please avoid the value guide. Other than that, pictures pictures pictures pictures pictures pictures pictures pictures ....did I mention pictures?

Worrie about the size and all that AFTER you write it. THEIR are LOTS of local publishers in ALL area's that would be happy to publish it...At BCCI 25th Chuck Buck asked me "Rich, When are you going to write that M9 bayonet book?" I prayed on it and started writting it. I am in it 100 pages matter of fact I am wrapping up the Chapter on Paul Bos tonite. Now I am not trying to one up you here JUST INSPIRE You...If you need anything email me bro!

History of course but please add in the different variations as well, I think a book on the 110 could get bigger with talk of the variations along with the history. A bit of of talk of famous people who have carried a 110 and some of the things people have done with a 110, I.E Joe smoe skinned a 2,000 pound Brown Bear in 1972 with just a 110, just my thoughts and yes I will read your book when you get it in print.

Very cool Dave,

I'll take one of those books. My 2 cents.....make this books section on the black/gold etch full of every SO, LE, Custom that was every made;). The art blade photo's will sell the book to even non-collectors, as it will make a nice coffee table book.

I would like to hear about how this knife was born and how it changed everything after it.

I'm excited for you! History, but also stories and pics of what the knives have done or what they mean to the owners. I'm sure the great folks here can give some very meaningful stories to you! What other knife was made that is so beautiful, useful and has the memories and sentiment attached? I would happily give five figures for the 110 I lost that my dad gave me.

Cool news Dave! It would be cool to see some early advertising copy and then some from after it took off and revolutionized the knife world. And of course pics, pics, and more pics!

Well, you can put me down for a copy. I would be interested in the history, of course, but also some of the thoughts and reasons for model changes.

You'll have 50 years to cover, so I don't see it being a small project.

Like others have said...lots of pictures.

Key people in the design and people involved in any redesigns.

As close as possible to dates of any changes.

Numbers produced each year.

I'd like to know more about that knife George had in his display. It's supposed to be kind of a prototype to the 1st/1st. That knife fascinated me!!

Maybe a page or two showing Dan bringing new life back into an abused knife.

Some information about the old custom shop and some pictures of sample knives produced there. The new custom shop and some handle choices.

You could finish the book with photos of the 50th anniversary 110's.

They'll be lots more to fill in the middle pages, but this should get you started.

Dave if you write it we will come---and buy. History, stories, pictures of as many variations, and customs as you can obtain, and a little Dave humor added.

Dave, I don't have much to add about content, since I'm not really a 110 guy--please forgive me, it's something I'm working on. But... I do have experience writing and editing. Should you need a set of eyes to look over the text, I'd be happy to do so. Of course, now that I've offered this, it's certain to be 300+ pages. But, I'm happy to help if I can.

Do it. As a new guy here i'm really impressed with the amount of knowledge available in this forum. A book about one of the most well known hunting knives ever made is sure to be a hit.

I would be interested in 2 things, primarily...

1) As somebody who works in design/engineering, I would love to learn more about the design process of the first one. Who was involved? What other knives did they draw on? What older locking mechanisms did they consider? Basically, I want a video camera view of those days in the shop when it was being created.

2) I would love to something in writing that described (via stories) the early popularity of the 110. Who used it and how? I want to see the knife fight on the USS Ranger documented and discussed. I want to see the popularity of the 110 among biker gangs discussed (this still continues). I want to see the popularity of the 110 among the 1970s early backpacking craze (this died off as other lockers displaced Buck).

You might also want to add several pictures of and a paragraph on how the 110 has sparked so many design copies. The 110 is the most copied knife design in the world.

A paragraph....LOL,

Matt I think one could make a nice chapter on this subject with photo's and time lines from the competitors scrambling to get some of Buck's market share $$$$$$;)

Dave,

You asked for suggestions and you are getting plenty here, plus those sent by e-mail. I think your first problem is going to be determining the focus and level of detail, what to include and what to leave out. If you include everything, it will be a massive and long term undertaking. You can always do volumes 2, 3, 4 ...
