OK, so I ordered my first traditional...

Just like we don't NEED to carry a knife. But it sure is convenient sometimes. :p

Exactly. Rarely do you NEED to open a pocket knife one handed (at least for myself it's almost never necessary). In some vocations it's certainly something that might often be needed, but I think for most of us the one-handed thing is primarily the "fun" of flipping it open is about all.

The Case large stockman is a nice knife. I have two - one each in CV and SS. Below is the SS version. Yes, it's purple. I like it.

The way to work around the one-hand opening issue is to use two hands. You can still close them one-handed just by pressing the spine of the blade against your leg and rotating the knife closed.

You could also buy a Case Russlock, it even has a liner lock.

If you need an OHO for work, carry one in addition to whatever traditional knife you have with you. Just because this particular sub-forum is limited to only discussing the traditional patterns, doesn't mean real life is like that. Carry what you need.

I had thought about both the Russlock and the Trapperlock, but I wanted something different. I mean, aside from the scales, what's really the difference between a Trapperlock and, say, a Speedform II or RAT1? I want something to broaden my horizons a bit. If it turns out I really can't get past the two-handed opening, oh well-- but I want to give it a try.

It arrived today, and so far I'm nicely pleased. Feels very nice in hand, acceptably sharp out of box. The spey blade pivot is a little rough and the spey blade rubs against the sheepsfoot-- you can see the rub mark in the picture there-- but it's going to be a user and not an investment, so I'm not concerned about rub marks. It's sitting in my left-side front pocket now, so the change from modern to traditional has commenced. Allons-y!
