OK What is your prize collection piece?

Silverwing,
I'll try to get a photo taken and scanned. I've never done that before. Don't worry, I can't afford ALL of Daniel's or Karen's work. In fact, I only have one piece now. But I do love it so. Try emailing them. I'll dig up the addresses for you later. They seem to be really nice folks as well as Amazing Artists. Watch that drool thing. Shorts out keyboards big time. In the mean time, look at www.artknife.com for some nice examples of their work. Paracelsus

Mine has to be my Ed Fowler 5" Proghorn. I just love this working knife & I use it! I don't think I can buy a knife and not use it now. Ed was such a great guy to deal with and since I bought the knife we have been corresponding back and forth and that adds to the fun. Ed has a 5 year wait for his knives, I feel very fortunate to have landed this one. Ed writes a colum every month for Blade magazine.

The handle is domestic sheephorn that has been aged for 4 years. The steel is forged 52100 bearing steel with very apparent temper lines. This knife just begs to be used---it is very tough. Test knives have been flexed to 90 degrees. The knife handle fits my hand like a glove and is concaved on the left side for a perfect fit. The steel has a convex edge and just tears into whatever it is cutting.

I could never get rid of this knife.

This is my favorite knife.

I guess for the sake of completeness:

The Outsider. My design concept, built by Harald Moeller in BC who also helped work out "heft and balance" issues. Kydex sheathed by Edgeworks Tactical, the sheath is almost as radical...tip up, grip down, prime edge forward and you "roll" it sideways out of the sheath and into a forward grip. Frequently carried weekends and some evenings.

The name came from my describing the REKAT Hobbit Warrior as an "inside gameplan knife" for the guy that likes to get close and fast in a reverse grip; The Outsider is the opposite, it's for a long-range forward-grip "outside" gameplan.

ATS34 treated, tempered and cryoed by Harald using Ernie Mayer's low-temp recipe. The "spike" secondary tip has cleaved a coconut with zero damage or even sharpening needed.

Greg,
You have an Ed Fowler, and that great kid?
You have the knife I want, and the son I've always wanted, you lucky dog. You just trumped, every other post IMHO.

You wouldn't sell your "Pronghorn", I don't think anyone does, I never see them on the secondary market. A purveyor, once told me they weren't a collectable, just an expensive using kniife. That guy didn't know beans. The only person who knows less, is the guy that HAD an Ed Fowler piece.

I have tried three times to get some good shots, but this one is still kicking my butt.

My favorite is an Al Polkowski Bodyguard. It has a 4" polished ATS-34 blade and polished G-10 scales. I favor it because of its clean, elegant lines and, with its three sheath system, it is very versatile. I question how collectible it is because anyone with $220 and 18 months to spare could have one just like it. However, since it's my only custom knife at present, it must be my favorite. Right?

Hi Phil,
Thanks for the nice comments. I have only seen one Fowler knife in the secondary market and it was his Iron Mistress version. If I only knew then what I know now I would have grabbed it up. The cost was something like $1100. Didn't have the money anyway.

I don't think I would every buy one of his Proghorns just to collect it. I would be missing the boat then. The knife is definitely a user. Funny, I have knives worth a lot less that I am afraid to scratch up--this knife gets a scratch, it doesn't bother me at all. I guess that is because Ed is so adamant about using his knives when you buy them that you have no compelling reason to put them on the shelf.

Regards,

Greg,
I once posted here, "Is it a crime, to own an Ed Fowler, and not use it?" Well, it probably should be. I'm not an outdoorsman, I live in Brooklyn not Alaska. I still want one. I've met Ed, had his knife in my hand, it's magic!
It's a work of art, a perfect combination of Form and Function. IMHO, nobody does it better. If I ever get one of my own, will I feel guilty that some hunter is being deprived of this wonderful piece? Yes, but I will get over it. I'm sure glad you have one, and glad that it's living the life Ed intended, and that it'll be passed on in your own family. Just knowing that makes my day.

Love that knife, I might have the micarta scales changed out for Mammoth Ivory one day!

PS
You guys put my knife to shame! Love the looks of those! Mike is that a Titanium handled Hawk? Tried to get a Hawk but was sold before I could come up with the money, that would be the one knife I'd trade my Tanto I made for, like the looks of those.
Ken, very nice Judge Looks wicked!

My most prized is probably my early model Syke-Fairbairn commando dagger with the cast bead-and-ridge handle. A real nice guy knew I collected old military knives and sold it me for $20.00, even after I told him I couldn't possibly pay him what it was worth (even back in 1975).

Nice stuff!
Pat,
That CenterCross "Pat's knife" is special.
Nice fellow made it too.

My favorite in the collection would have to be the XXL Kit Carson M-16.It has a 5.25"
CPM440v blade, titanium bolsters and liners, carbon fiber scales. It is a drop point.I beleive only 2 were made.Carson`s flipper function is just cool! For as big a knife as it is,it still carries very well.
I`m partial to big folders.
