OK WTF EXACTLY is flipping a knife????

Bookayasha!

Flicking it open (not with the usual spyderdrop) even works on my Spyderco Delica.

Cool.

Just for the record: You do not have to release the Axis lock first to flip open your knife. Quite the opposite: my 710 Axis is the easiest-to-flick knife I have. And it locks up like a prison.

You can flip open just about any knife, including lockbacks like my Spyderco Calypso Jr., if you hold the knife such that the butt end (the one that contains the point of the blade) moves in an arc--rather than holding it such that the pivot end moves in an arc.

Wayne,
No problemo. Just trying to keep the general forum family friendly.
Another good reason for limiting flicking practice. Last summer I was violating my own policy by sitting in front of the TV flicking my Sifu open. I underestimated the amount of rotating mass and it flew from my hand and landed point first in my bare left heel! The cut ran 2" long and 1/2" deep at its deepest point. I limped for about a month! So I decided that I had to get back up on the horse that threw me, and flicked it again, this time from a standing position with my body protected by the new living room couch. This time the knife stayed in my hand, but I did an accidental snap-cut on the couch in a real obvious place. If y'all ever come over to Chez Baker, you will notice that part of the couch is covered by a comforter. Now you know the rest of the story.
The Sifu stays in the drawer or in my pocket until I leave the premisis now

Flick a crummy knife for a while. As you develop the technique, you'll find that you can "chocke" the flick just as the blade extends. It's like hitting the brakes on your car, then easing up so that you don't get that last surge as the car comes to a complete stop. I have found, however, that you have to have really good knives to do this. Preferably Microtechs, etc. They have a bushing system that is firm, yet does not get overly tight. I had an AFCK which started out just right, then loosened waaaay up. So after tightening the pivot down, i found I could hardly flick it at all. Same with my favorite carry piece the Wimpff Klotzli; too loose, then too tight. it's difficult to get them just right. But If you get one that you can just ease out, instead of slamming open with a flick, you'll find that it saves lots of wear and tear on the piece.
I only have a few folders, and the ones i can "choke" are my two microtechs and my Spydie Viele.
But I would agree with the others: Don't flick in public, unless absolutely necessary. ('course, when it IS necessary, it's a good idea to know how to do it right

Flipping a knife is like "flipping the bird!"

1. It's socially unacceptable

2. People can get hurt as a result

3. It could end up costing you money

and......

4. Not everybody will think you're "cool" for doing it!

(Sorry - can't think of a comparison in an "extreme survival/defense situation." However, "flipping the bird" there would probably make matters worse!)

Practice, practice, practice. The only knife I've ever dropped by moving it around fast was a bali. Never by 'flipping' or 'flicking' - I started slow, instead of trying to do it perfect, the first time.
