I've been watching the new Sypderco products and must admit some interest in them. I currently own a Tenacious and love it. I even started a thread over in General called Tenacious II that was a survey on who wants a upgraded steel in a Tenacious. This got Sal to comment and to put it in short form: We ain't gettin no Tenacious II.

I also own a sage green G10 Endura 4 with VG-10 and I do like this knife but find it a tad large for everyday pocket carry. It is my only VG-10 knife and I've been most impressed with this steel.

So, for a fellow that adores his Tenacious but has allowed himself to become a bit of a steel snob; what Sypderco knife would you guys recommend for me? I actually have it down to three or maybe four but would be most interested in what you guys think based on the info I've given you. Thanks g

LOL, I misspelled Spyderco twice. Very sorry...that was totally unintentional. Spelling is a personal shortcoming. :o

paramilitary cpm d2! Very great knife!

1) If you would like a super strong knife with great steel go for the Para Military w/ S30V.
(my favorite by far)

2) A great worker that is a little smaller than the Endura you like, would be the G10 Delica w/ VG10.

3) A more elegant knife would be the Caly 3 w/ VG10. Don't let it fool you though this is one mean cutter and very strong LB.

All of these knives are in my EDC rotation and I love them all. As you can tell a prefer FFG blades and a strong lock, which Spyderco offers a ton of. Let us know what you think and we can pitch in some more ideas. You could always be bold and try out the new designs: Rock Lobster, Khukuri, Barong!

+1!!!

Great steel, great construction, great EDC size. Love everything about it!

My second rec would be the drop point FG UKPK. Right now it's my favorite EDC, period.

or if the para is too small then why not try it's bigger brother,
the Military. According to Yab&Josh (our two steel experts, I think) CPM-S30V is about on par with CPM-D2 when it comes to holding an edge. On one hand, D2 will take impact a bit better as it will tend to roll, while S30V may chip (in very extreme cases of hard use). S30V also has better rust resistance than D2 and should be easier to sharpen.

With that said, if you want a small blade gt the Para, but if that's too small get the Military...you really can't go wrong either way.

Good luck!

Edit: Sal said something about a knife called the Persistance which is the Tenacious II.

If your looking for something in-between the Para, and full size Millie, then I would say the Spyderco Stretch II CF/ZDP would do the trick. :D

Personal choice would be the Stretch II. The FRN/VG-10 version is an excellent value, very similar to the Tenacious in size and form-factor, but with better steel. The FRN/ZDP-189 version, which I believe will be shipping very soon, would upgrade the steel still further. The CF/ZDP-189 version is, in my opinion, the finest large folder Spyderco has ever produced.

Stretch FRN VG10 or soon to be ZDP189. That's my first pick as it's the Lotus Elise of Spyderco (no frills, just performance).

Caly3 in laminated ZDP and Carbon Fiber or VG10 if you really want the G10 handle and to save a few bucks.

Manix mini if you want S30v. Manix2 if you want 154cm or wait for the S90V version if you want to be a real snob.

The para's a great idea too.

Thanks all. I think I should really think hard about the para-millie. It was not on the list of three. What I am looking at seriously is:
Spyderco .. SAGE 1st Edition, Carbon Fiber scales, S30V
Spyderco .. Carbon-Fiber NATIVE 4, PE VG-10 FFG Blade
Spyderco .. Carbon-Fiber CALY III, plain-edge ZDP-189

I suppose the Sage and Native4 are running neck and neck.
Anyone have a side-by-side photo of the para and these two knives?? I would be most appreciative if that could be posted. Thank you. g

Try this for one man's opinion. I have Native 4 inbound but haven't had a Sage so I can't compare.

The Sage is nice, but I held out for the RIL model. It's a dress knife while the Tenacious is a workhorse.

The CF Native I just couldn't get into. VG-10 on a CF model? I'm sorry. Also very dressy.

The CF Caly is a very nice knife, but it's not a Tenacious. Smooth back lock dress folder with a racehorse steel.

All three of these knives are not really work knifes, imo. The Stretch 2 would fit the bill, but that's a tough call for me. I would hold out for the FRN/ZDP version for about $80 less then the CF version.

My picks

Your best bet as a comparable model would have to be either the Manix 2 (CBBL, 154CM) or the Paramilitary (compression lock, S30V/CPM D2). I highly recommend the D2 model because it's CPM D2 (major improvement imo), and it's going to get rare soon.

If you want to stay true to the liner lock, I'd say Military, but that's a bit big.

Well Josh I suppose they are all a tad dressy in that CF.
I am OK with that...not necessarily looking to replace the Tenacious per se.
Just saying I like it a great deal.
I'm honestly leaning toward the Sage. I'll let you guys know.

NOTO, thanks for the link. Great pictures and now I got the size down between the two.
Its been a long time since I ate friend chicken in the Groove...good times.

I may be forced to buy a Para-Millie cause the think just looks like a manly knife.
There is a pretty good knife store down in Freeport ME (home of LLBean and lots of other retail) and he may have one. I'll check. I'd like to put my paws around one. I guess that goes for the Sage and Caly. Thanks guys. g

I keep looking at the Para-Millie and it just looks strange to me as if the blade is to small for the frame. I'm sure the ergos are great but something about it...I just don't know. Maybe I'll roadtrip to Freeport today and see if the knife shop there has one.

So what is it you Para guys love about the knife? I still am wishing for a US made Tenacious in a premium steel but then I think it would be nice to win the powerball too.

Anyway, did I hear correctly that the Mannix II will be coming as a flat grind LE in the near future?

Thanks gw

OK I just order two of these from KnifeCenter.com...maybe I got my Spydie fix.

Spyderco Persistence Folding Knife 2-3/4" Plain Edge Blade, G10 Handles. This is going to be a big hit I think. $67 to my door for two of them. Little brother will get one of these.

The Para has it all. I loved it right out of the gate. Give the Para some time if you don't feel the POWER! You will. If not, she's not for you.

For something a little different, check out the Terzuola slipit. Looks are an A+ for me so far.
