Okay, here's another one - how about Amber

John, its just the amber the way it is in its current condition. Its cracked through and through and has air pockets within and deep crevaces about the surface. I was able to cut enough from one piece to make a spacer I think consistant enough for a knife but I need two for the knife I wanted to make and I can't see getting another good spacer from this stuff. Its beautiful stuff if you like collecting amber but not good enough for knife material. Thankfully I don't have that much in it. I got 5 pieces for 55 bucks and only used one piece so I hope to recover some of that by putting it back on Ebay. I'll explain my sad story there too so no one else tries to use it as I did.

Roger-

I would recommend not etching the tang. You can paint the tang shoulders and tang with finger-nail polish before etching, and that area will stay untouched, even if totally submerged in etchant.

I do that on some of mine...and would definitely do it if I were going to use amber over the tang.

Nick, thanks for that advise. I had wondered about the etching showing through amber but think the advise about gold leafing the tang is best, or leaving it as is. This is all new ground for me (again).
