I was browsing ye old auction site a few nights back when I saw this Schrade. No one had bid on it and the starting price was less than the shipping and on an impulse I bid and won it. As you can see part of the leather is missing front and back but the rest of the knife is in good shape. I could replace the old leather with new but that seems rather dull. I could do a cholla cactus handle on it like I did a Marble Expert I rescued but I have done that bit already. I have been looking at some really nice Sambar Stag rolls...pricey but really pretty. Tulipwood is really nice looking stuff but I am not a big wood fan unless it is really spectacular.

So what do ya'll think? I am really leaning towards the Sambar Stag but haven't made up my mind yet...

I'm curious as to what you do. I thought of leather washers to fix this one up. I want to bring this Robeson back to life also.

Hi,

Nice project. I'm not real big on large pieces of stag. I would lean more to say, a wood/bone combination.

But one thing I know is what ever you choose it's going to look good!

They said stag, but I think a nice piece of burl would be good...then there's always the various rosewoods or ebony.

but leather washers... i have a soft spot for leather handled knives, like my Catt225Q 60+ years and its still serviceable:thumbup:
dont get me wrong all the other suggestions would look great too
but i say leather! put some hide on it:D

I'm old fashioned and I really like the look and feel of leather when using a knife like the one you have. just my 2 cents.

I vote for stag since it isn't my money.:D The honey horn rolls in the Jantz catalog look pretty cool too. Some multicolored dymondwood would be a really different look as well. If you can find some wood locally it might be worth checking out. I found a very nice block of tulipwood at a Rockler store that I plan on using for a knife handle at some point. I don't think I would buy any wood unseen though.

Its your decision, but the rest of the knife is still in decent condition and the original sheath is still very serviceable, I would put it back to the way it was originally.

I too like knives with different scale materials, but for some, leather just looks right. And IMHO this is one of those knives.

There is no right or wrong, do what you think will make you happy when its done, and be sure to take pics so we can see it in progress and at completion

My vote is for epoxied leather washers. And a suggestion: do a photographic 'before-and-after' series too. That old Schrade will make a nice heirloom someday.

thx - cpr

Jigged bone might be 'grippy' but Antique Ivory Micarta might not be bad either....

I would put stag on it. It's an old knife and I think it should be visible which part had been repaired.

What do I think? I think buying up great old knives like this and giving them some TLC, a spiffy new handle and quality sheath would make for a sweet little cottage business for you. You should do it, man!

If it were mine I would restore the handle to as close to original as possible and document it.

I have some questionms on leather washers. Can you get them pre-tapered? Where do you get them?
