I have been reading bits and pieces off and on now for awhile, I might like to get me a neck knife! What are your suggestions on which one I should get? I would like it to be made of BG-42, CPM-420V, or a high grade stainless steel (high rust resistance). Overall length not to exceed 7". One piece/one steel.

Now is your chance to make a fixed blade knife knut out of me, only in a neckknife version though!

Allen Blade's Chipmunk, search this forum for Chiro75's writeup on small fixed blades.

Thanks for the tip Elvislives! I really liked the look of the Rekat Hobbit Fang and just called to see if I could get one made out of a high grade stainless steel instead of the 1095 high carbon and was told that all of the neck knives have been discontinued by Rekat.

Well, what else is out there?

I would second Allen's work, I have a couple of his MEUK's. High performance for your dollar. I think he generally works in carbon and tool steels. He has done Talonite blades though which will be rust proof under normal enviroments.

Lynn Griffith does some nice neck knives as well. I have a MNK which is ultra small, OAL is about 3.5 inches. He has a SUB series which has similar length blades with longer handles. Lynn normally works in ATS-34 but will use other steels as options.

Ed Schott would be another choice. I don't know if he makes neck knives as such, however he is very open to designs and I would definately suggest dropping him an email. As for corrosion resistance, CPM-420V is a steel choice.

R. J. Martin also comes to mind for high performance cutting ability in a small package. However his wait time is now fairly long. Getting a piece second hand though is possible. R. J., works in a large variety of steels including BG-42 and CPM-420V.

I was just looking at Runningdogs web site also. I see that he will make out of BG-42 if requested according to what is said at his web site.

L@@KING to buy a 2 or 3 now (of the same ... you know me, I always have to buy more than one), I got the bug for a neck knife ...... what to buy I'm

ooohh, I just found one like what I am looking for, sort of. Just wonder how comfortable it would be under the shirt though? This is more on the lines of what style I am looking for though! A tanto neck knife.

I'm kind of leaning on the Crawford Tanto Neck Knife or the Pup Neck Knife by Michael at Runningdogs. I do also like what I see with your Fred Perrin Tanto "La Griffe" and the Ray Kirk "Lil Blue". What are their website addresses or where do you get them at?

The only thing that bothers me a little though is the ATS-34 steel in these. I prefer CPM-420V or BG-42 because of better rust resistance and edge holding abilities. But, ATS-34 would sufice if that's all I can get.

This is Ray Kirk's website. Ray got his Journeyman Smith rating at the Blade Show. His work is great in a variety of steels. One sharp edge too.

Fred Perrin is selling through a couple of dealers here in the states. I got all of mine directly from Fred except for one.

Fred should be back in France soon.

Here's where I would start looking, in no particular order:

Allen Blade
Running Dog Knife Company (esp. Little Camper)
Sean Perkins- nothing in stainless steels, but his knives are superb and he recently released a very affordable one called Lightwing.

I would avoid Lynn Griffith's knives for now for two reasons. The first is they are way overpriced, and the second is that in a recent test of four of his knives I found uneven grinds and warped blades to be a problem on all four. He has some neat little knives, but then again you also get slapped with a 9 month wait. Neck knives are a dime a dozen and most makers are putting out some really cool little ones! Dr. lathe (neil blackwood) also makes a few that are cool. The one with all the holes (sorry, forgot its name!) looks to be about the size of Crawford's, but a little more affordable, and his Kydex looks to be top notch.

Chiro,

Anybody here will tell you that I haven't been a big supporter of Lynn Griffith's hijinx etc.

However, it looks like you are just looking for an excuse to trash him here as you did on the TKCL list yesterday.

I know you said that you were banned from his forums etc, but I think you should limit your comments here to suggesting the knives that you recommend and not use this as a venue to revile Griffith.

I seem to recall you didn't like it much when you were characterized as a cheapskate on these same forums.

My two cents, you're welcome to ignore the advice.

Mark- you might also want to check out Newt Livesay's neck knives. Also, Hammerhead sells some interesting stuff at his site. Blues- thanks for being the voice of reason!

Hi!

I totally agree on the La Griffe, small and easy to carry and my opinion is that it has defense potential way higher then it's size suggest.

If that's not important/a consider factor then it's a very good user too

I love mine! (i got the Emerson version, hopefully i'll get a real Perrin one soon)

I highly reccomend the guys at Running Dog. I have one of the standard Lil Pups and it is a great neck knife and very well done. I'm waiting on a Warncliffe model in BG42 with elk scales. They also rehandled and sheathed a Kelley Ward knife for me and did a fantastic job. These guys put out an excellant product at reasonable prices and offer more extra services all the time. Give em a try, you won't be sorry.

Chiro,
I greatly appreciate the mention, but with all due respect..... The last thing I want to do is get involved in a P-ing contest with anyone here on the forums, but I feel the need to say something here!!!!
I looked at about 20 of Lynns knives at the Blade Show this weekend. I saw NONE that had any flaws. They are handmade knives and may vary SLIGHTLY from knife to knife. I saw none with warped blades, uneven grinds or anything that would have drawn my attention as poor workmanship. There is a good reason why Lynn has a 9 month backlog! I'm sure he doesn't enjoy "slapping" someone with a long delivery time, he is busy, a one man operation and that is business. I would in NO WAY say his knives are overpriced. The rate at which they disapeared off his table at the show is positive proof of this. I didn't see anyone at his table griping about prices as ther reached for their wallets.
My knife with the holes in it is called the LiteWave. The base model in D2, bead blast with a Kydex neck sheath is $175 plus shipping. This is about $40 more than the neck knife by Pat Crawford. His knife is excellent, I looked also handled it at the show. Pat Crawford is a well known, big name maker!! I'm known only locally and here at BF. I would be interested you hear your thoughts on that pricing??

Blues :

I would really appreciate some contact info.

Neil, on the pricing, it is obvious you are ripping people off. By the way would you consider making a smaller version, blade wise (2" or under) of this :

http://www.geocities.com/Eureka/Meeting/5520/Hawkbsm.jpg

I know I asked you about the same knife awhile ago, but I am actually serious about buying it this time. If you are then drop me an email about deposits and whatnot.

Considering judging a makers worth, it would be only fair to give them the same ability. Turn it around and let them judge the worth of various reviews. That would be an interesting forum.

Cliff,

I would recommend calling Fred at:

33-1-60-88-41-74

If he's not there, he has a recorder on the line. Fred's English is pretty darn good, so don't worry about communicating.

I've noticed that BladeArt is now carrying some of his work:
www.bladeart.com

And finally, Laci Szabo usually has some of Fred's stuff, though I don't know what his current inventory consists of.

How's that?

Your idea is probably way too logical to ever bear fruit

.
Course, it would HAVE to be on GB&U forum!!!
By the way Cliff, you have my vote for being the closest in spirit to "Mr. Spock" from Trek fame, here on our humble forums (and I mean that as a compliment).
