Anyone have thoughts on this match up?

Both are almost exactly the same length and both are 1/4 stock
Both companies are well regarded.
They are different in shape, and grind however.
Both are available to view at Chestnut Ridge Knife Shop online.

I am torn on if I even need a knife to do what these are made for ..lol or if I would be better served with something thinner that could still pass most of the same strength tests.

For the sake of argument though, you have to go into the woods with only one of them, and no other knives, which would you take?

As much as I like Kabar products, I think that TFI is one SWEET blade, one of the few Ranger series that actually appeals to me. From it's looks, I think that the TFI would do better at the jobs a knife is designed for, whereas the BK2 is a sharpened prybar. 5160 steel SHOULD be tougher than 1095CV but the thinner grind on the TFI may negate that toughness advantage. I don't care for the handles on the Beckers myself, after playing with a couple. I'd have to handle the TFI, but from looking at it, that would be the one I choose.

I think this should help you make your decision. OKC is a great company with some good blades, but there is a cult following for Becker and there is a reason behind that. Click here.

Dunno OKC - looks great though. For me just about anything vs the BK2 has the BK2 coming out on top. That blade does about every thing I need it to do. Here - check my BK2 fanboy commercialish thing...

It whittles tiny spoons and forks and things...

It chops seasoned oak for no good reason...

It cleans fish...

It batons...

It poses majestically...

It survives nuclear blasts...

What's not to love?

Join the Becker cult. There may or may not be free ponies.

I am already a Becker fan ...

The reason I like the TFI's look so much is because it looks like a Becker Magnum Camp, just sized more to what I want it for.

I know Becker is going to be making the Tweeners, and a medium Magnum Camp will be available, but that one falls at 3 1/2 inches blade length I think and that's smaller than what I'm looking for.

I wonder if I could talk Ethan into making a 6 1/2 inch bladed Magnum Camp with no swedge..lol that would be such a sexy belt/camp knife.

That TFI is sweet lookin and all but......

You can't tell me that's not a beautiful knife :D

It is in fact a thing off beauty, without a doubt, I also like the RSK Mark II and the BK 10 as well as many other Beckers.

tfi is nice to look at thats for sure. but good looking isst useful . BK2 from here until eternity and it looks awesome

Ok Maybe I should have just asked , "What do people think about the TFI?" ..lol

Comparing anything to the BK 2 is probably not a fair fight.
So Let me rephrase,

Anyone have or have used a Ranger TFI? and how does it handle use and abuse ? how does it slice and chop and what not?

I may be buying both the BK2 and the TFI, just trying to get input on the TFI too.

I would put a Ranger RD up against anything Becker makes and in the case of a BK2 would be a more apples to apples comparison. If all things are equal 5160 has better impact strength and is tougher whereas 1095 would probably win in edge holding. Considering the difference in the design of the TFI and the BK2 I would guess that the BK2 would be tougher and the TFI with its full flat grind would be the better slicer. Personally I would choose the TFI as the more useful design.

Love your Avatar, Barbarian.
Death Dealer is one of my favorite characters in fantasy novels.
Thanks for the input, that's pretty much the lines I was thinking along when I asked the question.

It's pretty hard to beat the BK2. The angle of grind is a little to mild if you ask me resulting an edge thats more like a hatchet than a knife, but thats a simple fix.
