Olamic detent adjustment

Has anyone adjusted the detent on an Olamic? I would be very grateful if someone could walk me through this, I assume it’s just a matter of adjusting one of the two screws that hold that lock bar insert in place but the screws are pretty locked in and I don’t want to go cranking on them without knowing what I’m doing.

Thanks!

Have you considered sending it to Olamic? I've sent two in for service, one for adjusting/increasing the detent, and they've been terrific.
I will if it comes to this but I thought I had read these were designed with a user adjustable detent. This is a newer model with the thumb stud and I really want to be able to use the stud but it’s a no go with the strong detent as it is.

I've heard using a hairdryer can loosen the screw if loctite is holding onto it. Also, putting tape over the screw and then unscrewing it can help.

Are you able to post a pic or two? Curious as to which model and trying to picture how an adjustable detent might work. Mine (non-thumbstud models) have screws holding the steel lockbar/over-travel insert containing the detent ball and no ability to adjust; the strength of the detent is dependent upon the lockbar angle.

I lightened the detent on a 247 to do a flipper delete.

The insert has an over travel stop on this one at least- so I had to take the insert out, relieve some pressure on the lock bar and put it back in. Worked like a charm and fixed the centering issue it had.

That’s what I’d do if the knife were a lot cheaper but not on this one :-) it looks to me like one of the screws actually can push the insert out or in to adjust how far the detent ball juts out, I’d imagine perhaps it’s designed to be adjustable. But unless I know for sure I’ll probably just live with it for now and send it in eventually. Thanks gents, appreciate the input!!

Terrible photos, apologies, I can imagine that perhaps that lock bar insert screw closest to the pivot might adjust the in/out positioning of the insert. Would love to hear from someone who may know this model, it’s brand new, his new “purist” blade shape.

Looks like the inserts haven't changed. Loosening or tightening the screw isn't going to change much if anything. The insert has a built in over travel stop and they milled a slot in the scale for it to fall into (if you look closely at the bottom you will see it). You would still need to remove the lock bar insert and push the lock bar over to relieve tension in my opinion.

This looks like one of their newer models - is it just too tight for you out of the box? I've had 2 of the 247 and they have always gotten better for me over time. If you are uneasy about messing with the lock bar or messing with the small insert screws then just leave it alone and use the thing.

I read the product description at dlt and they mention that the “detent itself can be tuned”…adjusting lock bar tension is always an option with a frame lock so I assumed that statement meant there was an easier adjustment method, but you very well may be right. The detent is actually very “squishy” due to the tight engagement, so when trying to deploy with the thumb stud I can actually see the lock bar bending and blade shifting but the detent doesn’t break. Flips okay so I’ll just live with it for now. Appreciate the reply!

Btw I realize I sound down on the knife, but it flips well, and the ergos and balance are just incredible, no regrets at all with this one!! I was just excited for the multiple deployment methods and so far the thumb studs are a no go for me.

I have 2 SWISH models and they have opposite detent issues, one being almost impossible to reliably deploy and one being loose and mushy. One refuses to center for me as well. They will be riding FEDEX back to Olamic. At these prices I expect better frankly! Nice eye candy though, but I also need FUNCTION!

I’ll likely be sending my wayfarer back as well at some point. While there’s a lot I like, the action is just insanely mushy, I swear if I try to slow roll open I can push the blade out about half an inch before it finally breaks free of the detent. The motion is coming from the large amount of flex the lock bar allows, so it actually moves out significantly with the blade as I’m pushing. Not a big issue for flipping but for flicking out via thumb stud where you normally need to pre tension a bit it’s a real problem. I really can’t wrap my head around this design. My whippersnapper was not like this at all.

Exactly. I took one of them that was insanely tight and flexed the lockbar to make it looser. It is better and usable, but man, it's a $600+ custom blade and they both have issues. I sent Olamic an email and hopefully they will take them in and make them right! I may even sell or trade them if Olamic cannot satisfy me. I certainly would not buy another one anytime soon that's for sure.

This is definitely not a thread I wanted to see. I've been keeping an eye out for a really nice olamic for a while but these posts have me worried. I don't want to pay $600+ for a knife with detent issues. 😞

So I have 4 Olamics. I wanted more flexibility and a very specific want on my detent on my Busker. They made it so. It worked spot on out of the box... I just wanted something specific that is hard to describe. But I also sent the knife in for a makeover at the same time.

My other 3? Perfect for my want out of the box. I was actually on the phone today discussing a new knife with Olamic.

I would not take my comment ad a detent issue. I did wonder if the OP ever sent it in and got it dealt with. They are super easy to deal with.

What kind of Olamic were you thinking? I have a Wayfarer 247, Wayfarer 247CF, Busker and Whippersnapper 2 Bolsterlock. I am debating on a Rainmaker or another 247.

My busker on IG (hope that is ok)... I think you will get that I am happy with it.

I guess I'd say I'm picky when it comes to knives that expensive. I don't want an unfinished ti lock side. I don't own a hinderer for the same reason. Something about it irks me. I really, really like the mouflon blade shape but if I can find one with a finish I really like then I'd pull the trigger on it. I keep putting it off because I've been buying customs more than anything else lately. Lol. But they are a brand I'm keeping an eye on incase I stumble across one that just speaks to me.

Note for sale but... you don't have to be unfinished.

No, I've been watching and there have been a couple I've come pretty close to buying a few times. I know they have finished lock sides, too, that's just something I'm particular about. I've seen some with amazing show sides then blank ti lock sides and it just bugs me. Lol. There's one ok bladehq I keep going back to look at. I may end up purchasing it soon if it doesn't sell before I get around to it. Lol
