Old .22s?

Was gifted and old New Haven 250CA a decade ago, and just found it after a move. Was missing the charging knob, safety was broken, missing magazine, light surface rust EVERYWHERE. Had some time off from work, so I made it a project. Bore is clean enough, had to manufacture a safety and charging handle, the stock is now a fine cherry color. May cut some brass plates for the mag well and butt.

Anywhoo, anybody have any love affairs with old .22s? Some unfathomable, maybe slightly undeserved infatuations with wood-and-steel rimfires?

I gotta admit, this lil rifle cuts quite a figure all done up. I can see why my buddy held onto this one for 30+ years. Let's see 'em! I'll post pics in the AM, hope some of you do,too.

I love walnut and blue steel .22 rimfires!

Here is a Savage 4C I bought for $30 last year as a unsafe, non working gun. Well it is now complete and functional!

I also refinished my first .22, a Remington 582. I'll dig up pics of it and post them up here in a bit.

I received this Winchester M1890 in .22short for my 12th birthday.... 54 years ago....naturally I tried to cold blue it back then....

I have a few dozen .22LR turnbolts from the '30s-'50s. A few before from the teens and '20s and one from '68. I've been shooting them for years. Your challenge is going to be finding ammo to keep up steady shooting as it has been for the last year. When you do find it, but it buy the case. Keep a minimum of 1-2 years worth of shooting stocked. I'm at 19K-20K cartridges. Once I get to 10K I reorder.

Here are three Winchesters I received in trade about 18 months ago. These three rifles and wad of $100 bills for a Colts U.S. Property M1911 delivered o the U.S. Army in December 1913. From the bottom: Winchester M04-22, M57, and M69

These old Rugers are what my son and I use to compete against each other. The MkII Government Target I got from my now dead best friend. It now belongs to my son. The Ruger Standard is mine.

Dayum! All beautiful. Sorry to hear about your friend, the legacies they leave behind for us, no? My New Haven was unfireablen when I got it. The barrel has been sanded down and clear coated, debating whether to blue it of not. It's mainly a range toy, and to get the gf shooting something while I'm at the range. Thanks for sharing, everyone.

Blue it, but not cold blue. Won't cost much to hot blue it. Bluing is protection. A controlled rust, if you will.

Your New Haven may be a rebranded Mossberg, they made firearms for many of the smaller house names. Cross reference shows a couple 250 models as Mossberg but I don't see a CA.

I have had a long love affair with vintage .22's. At one point I had almost 30, so many I could barely squeeze them in my safe. One of my absolute favorites is a 1940's vintage Mossberg 146b. Now that's a rifle. It is more accurate than a sporte weight rifle should be. With Wolf Mt I shot tighter groups with it than any of my heavy barrelled target guns. My Win 52, Remington 513T, Mossberg 144 LSB, none of them could shoot with it, so I sold them all and most of my other .22's. Most of the ones I have left are old Mossbergs. I've never had one that was a bad shooter.

A couple pics. 146b:

Sadly, I don't own a few of these any more.

Here is my 1976 Ruger New Model Super Single-Six (has cylinder for 22LR and 22 Mag.).
This Ruger has a marking of "MADE IN THE 200TH YEAR OF AMERICAN LIBERTY".

Yeah! This one is definitely a Mossberg. I found quite a few similarly-modeled New Havens and Mossbergs, but couldn't find any definitions for the lettering after the model number. I would love to blue it, but is a time/money investment that is completely disproportionate to how much I shoot it at the moment. Also just found an old Remington Speedmaster in pieces in my dads attic. Hosed it down with a good penetrating oil and gonna see how much damage the layer of rust has done.

More beautiful pics! Those are all nice, that Ruger is callin my name. Found one at Gander Mountain, just have to pony up for it I suppose. Also would like to get nicer .22 bolt action. The wish list...

I just found this one in the back of the safe. 1930's H&R Sportsman Double Action. Probably gonna sell it since I had kind of forgotten about it anyways.

The H&R 999, such a great cool little gun, give you $100 for it  :D

I'm a fan of first issue Woodsmans myself, don't have a shooter some yet, just my safer from 33', but I do love shooting others.

Also a fan of the old T bolt handle Mossberg 146Bs, heavy, but accurate with an adjustable trigger

One day, Smith 17 and a Colt Police Positive in a 22, I love those little buggers

I have a couple dozen old .22's. I just came across my first one, an old Marlin Glenfield bolt action I received for my 11th birthday, while cleaning up my mom's place. It's been more than 20 years since I shot that one last. What a great little rifle.

I don't have any pictures, but what was really funny is I took it over to a cousin's to put in the safe and he looked at it and said, "The scope's worth more than the rifle."

Maybe, but it's not going to get sold until I pass, and then I won't care.

H&R .22 revolvers? Love them (if they're in good shape). This one with both .22LR and .22Mag cylinders and box and papers.
