Old 440-C vs. New 420HC

TAH,

What are you useing to sharpen your blades? When my AG S30V got dull this hunting season; my Lansky got it hair popping sharp again in less than 15 minutes. I would recommend you get one  $30 bucks or less ;) .

jb,

I have a Spyderco SharpMaker, which works well, but it just takes more time and effort to sharpen those higher end steels. My 110 is new so I haven't needed to sharpen it yet. From what I have read, I'm assuming it will be a breeze.

Hey Jb 4570, which Lansky system do you have? I see that there is about 3
different one's. One has diamonds, and one has more rocks than the other.
Thanks
Jeff

Hi Jeff,

I have the standard bottom of the line Lansky set and it works just fine. If you are going to buy one I don't think it matters which one you get as their sharpener works well. But, spend the extra bucks for the holder ;) . It's a big help.

Be aware that there is a plastic holder and a metal holder. Not everyone carries both.

I bought the "plastic" one- all they had...
for the 5 bucks I spent on it its well worth it, no problems yet.
It doesnt have to hold up a truck or anything so I dont forsee any problems with it. Just helps to stabilize the knife and sharpener during the sharpening procedure :D

...Lansky also sells a clamp-on version made of aluminum as well. It's great for using the Lansky where ever you happen to be...

Aluminum one is only $2 more...

Actually, $4.99 for the plastic,
And $7.99 for the aluminum is $3.00 difference but who's counting,
I am not saying it is not worth it, just that if all they have is the plastic it isnt a bad deal. If it was either use the lansky without the holder or buy the plastic I would definately buy the plastic as I did. Just my .02

Also dont forget about the $7.00 shipping charge from SMKW...
Local store had the plastic for $5.00 it works great.

Go with the diamond set! It is worth the extra cash. The first time you try to sharpen a BG-42 or S30V you will wish you had it. As far as the regular Lansky goes the newer sets have different fine and extra fine stones from what they used to have. Not sure when they made the switch but the fine and extra fine used to be ceramic now they are not! I actually scored a couple older deluxe sets on eBay for under 25.00 with pedastals. Both looked unused!

...I use my Deluxe Lansky to sharpen BG-42 and S30V from time to time. The Deluxe Lansky also has the standard stones but it has five (5) of them. I gotta admit that I do cheat a bit when using it on BG-42 and S30V...I have a DMT aligner handle and rod with their course diamond stone in it. I use it on the Lansky when I have lots of stock to remove when I repair or reprofile an edge on them. After I have the edge set properly it's easy to keep the BG-42 and S30V sharp as I want it...I still prefer the wet/dry on the glass plate though...Stropping finishes them off for me...
