So, am I the only one who wanders around the house and shop wondering where in the world he put a 16" khukuri? I cleaned up a KLVUK - removed the scale, acid etched the blade and then refinished the wood. I brought it in to let the oil soak in and dry two nights ago ... where ... I have no idea.

Sheesh.

It's okay George, I looked all around last night for about 20 minutes for my tape measure, only to finally find it right in front of my face on the bench where I first started looking. And I haven't even broken 30 yet!

Uhhh....How long did ya leave it in the acid?:D

LOL - not that long. That definitely got a laugh. It sounds like something I would do actually.

My wife is razzing me that I can't find it now. I had to admit I misplaced it to her in case she moved it. She didn't. Arrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggghhhhh :-)

It's always in the last place you look. If you haven't found it yet you haven't found the last place yet. I wish you good luck.
You might want to set up a dementia test. That's different from Ahlzeimers although I can't remember the difference.

Apparently I set it down on a step ladder to put wood in our stove. Man, I don't remember doing that but am happy to find it. I still have to make the Kydex sheath for it plus my wife will stop laughing at me now :-)

LOL

I saw a comic once who was hillarious and had a point - of course it was the last place you looked - don't tell me you continued looking for it after you found it! I found it funny anyways :-)

hey got a question, dont mean if this is called hijackin, but I seen what you all were sayin about acid etchin your klvuk,I have been wanting one, alwy"s miss the boat, but I happen to snag a satisal handel 15"ak,but I want to dull the shiny blade for rough use, should I etch it somehow,or just scuff/sand it up.ill start goin back in the archives a ways and see what I can dig up,thanks.

I'm curious what the magic apple vinegar would do to a highly polished version. I don't have one I'd want to do that to right now but the day ain't over yet.

thanks philllll and Bawanna, diggen for my scotbrite and steelwool, and I just found some vinegar in the kitchen, time to experiment. thanks.

I didn't scour or sand a bit. Just a single layer of paper towel, left for a couple hours. I didn't even use Bounty "The quicker picker upper". Just soaked it and laid it evenly as possible so I had full contact. As Philll pointed out anyplace the paper towel isn't in contact will produce a spot different than the rest.

I don't know what it'll do on a polished blade but I'm aching to hear your results. Well aching might be a bit exaggerated but I anxious to see your results.

yeah gonna try to do it this evening, been at the hospital,a good friend had a quad bypass done this morning,i came home to check my mail and take care of his dog.was afraid mail would loose my kukri today, but got it safe n sound.my friends more important though..probably headin back to town.

I did it on my Bahadur, which wasn't totally polished when I started because I had to sand off some rust, but it was close. No forge scale or anything to deal with. It came out real nice, not very shiny anymore though.

Smoke & prayers for your friend, bargs!

One suggestion - thoroughly clean the blade first with acetone or brake cleaner otherwise any oil or grease will mess you up. I would recommend holding the knife with gloves after that to avoid oils from your skin contaminating the blade. Apple cider is a nice safe etcher.

Also, it does help it go faster the warmer it is. I heat mine to 90-100F otherwise the reverse happens too - the colder it is the slower it is. Your wife will not be happy with the smell if you do it indoors with heat.

I hope your friend gets better.

Phil, that blade looks great. Very nice even color by the looks of it. You can see the temper line - that's cool.

Yeah the temper line is pretty awesome. This model has a longer hardened area than the usual khuks so it really stands out. The line is almost black in person when you look at the right angle. I soaked that one probably 5-10 separate times for 1-4 hours each time.
