Hi All,
What do you get when you take a beat up old Spanish bayonet and let a knife maker play with it. In this case you get something like a Great White Hunter. Well that was the original idea, but as things turn out , it turned out different.
Hi my name is Kenneth Hills and I have been building knives for the last 8 years. You might have seen my work around the web under Mongrel Knives. I am pretty good at what I do, heck it pays the mortgage. Any way so I purchased some old Spanish Bayonets drilled out the handles and removes all the hardware. What I was left with was a very long blade and tang. Enter the KMG machine and some file work, mix in some 416 stainless fitting and stacked leather handle and here is what you get. One heck of a survival knife.
A word on the heat treat and Tempering. Because this was an unknown steel I treated it as if it was a 10XX variety. That would be hi-carbon. It was brought to 1450 degrees and left to cool over night then fashioned into what you see. The heat treating was done my Paragon oven the blade was brought to 1550 held for 30 min. then quenched in oil. Put back in the oven at 425 for an hour then let cool .repeat. It appears to have worked, it has the feel and sound of a Rockwell 59-60 blade. When you snap your nail off it, it has a ring to it. You knife makers know what I am talking about.
Now about the knife, lets call it a small Bolo:
The recurve blade is just shy of 7 inches long and very sharp. Total length of the knife is 11.5 inches weight is 8.6 oz. Point of balance is at the guard so it feels very light in the hand. The nine serrations on the top are hand filed and very aggressive. The blade is an inch high at the guard and 3/16ths thick. In all likely hood the steel is 1095 or 1084 (handle enough of this stuff and you get a feel for it) and hardened and tempered to a Rockwell 59 or so. You can get a pretty good feel for the hardness of the blade when you put the final edge on it. The bevels are taken to 2500 grit the flats to 650 then polished. It came out really well. The grind on the blade converse, good for cracking through things. Most of the tang was replaces with 416 Stainless Allscrew which was silver brazed to the remainder of the old tang. The leather washers are ..well leather washers. The guard and butt plate are also made from 416 stainless.
Price is $200.00 plus $7.50 for USPS priority shipping. The unmodified bayonet is not included. I will thorough in the old military sheath or if you want I can make you a custom Kydex belt sheath for $25.00 or leather for $40.00. If you are interested leave a note on the thread and IM me for PayPal info. First Ill take it gets it. Comment's are always appreciated.
