We were cleaning out my grandparents house, while they move out, today. I found an old belt grinder and thought nothing of it. Until now when i realized how satisfying it would be to make my own knives. My grandpa sharpened a lawn mower blade in front of me. I was thinking of taking this and trying to make some knives as a beginner. It could be from 1960+. I could go find the details as i am going back next weekend to finish up. Is this safe? or has anyone had problems using an old grindstone? Thanks.

If you mean a grinding wheel run by a fan belt from a motor.....
They are pretty coarse grit, which is OK for grinding a profile, and sharpening, but not much use for the finer details in making a knife. The belt grinders we use are abrasive belts running on contact wheels. Files and sandpaper make a better bevel

The old grinding wheel units can be dangerous if run at any speed above slow, BTW. They are intended to only run at about 100-200 RPM.

Someone who shall remain nameless did the SAMe thing. Ran an old grindstone with a motor and almost got himself killed

Yes, Some Anonymous Maker did that and the wheel exploded.

If the wheel is sound, and the wheel is turned slow enough, it should work. I would go for 60 RPM at the wheel.
