Old Benchmade and Spyderco folders from the Pawn Shop

I went by a local pawn shop and ended up walking out with a couple of old, small, beat up folders - a Benchmade and a Spyderco.

The Benchmade has what appear to be a couple small chips in the serrated portion of the blade. It folds out remarkably smooth despite how worn it looks. There's absolutely zero play in blade when it's locked which is also surprising. The blade has the butterfly with "Bali-Song" in the middle and says Benchmade U.S.A. beneath that. It says ATS-34 near the handle.

The Spyderco also looks pretty worn and isn't that sharp. It doesn't fold out as smoothly as the Benchmade but like the Benchmade, it has zero play when it's locked. One side of the blade says "Syderco G-2 Stainless" and the other side says "Seki-City Japan"

Can anyone tell me another about these folders? What model they are and what the steel is like? I paid $13 for both - how did I do?

I basically want to clean these up and use them for EDC. Any suggestions on where/how to start? Both blades need some TLC and I'm not sure how to sharpen serrations.

Thanks guys

The Spyderco closed, it has a fully serrated blade

I can post more pictures if it'll help with the identification process

well any bm or spyderco for 13 is already a deal no matter the knife. but without pics it might be hard to tell

haha when i started typing you hadnt posed any pics yet. what about full shots of both knives open?

Yeah, just to clarify it was $13 total for both knives. I can't tell if the blades have rust on them or it's just grime. I wanted to post pictures before I tried cleaning them. I'll post a couple shots of the knives fully open in a few minutes.

You did great! Especially for the BM. They both look like Zytel handles which tell me they were not expensive to begin with. The BM was prolly a $45 knife new, at best. ATS-34 is good steel though, I've had plenty of BM's with that steel, and it works fine. Good idea checking out pawn shops, I think I'll try that!

I'm not totally sure but I think that the Benchmade might be the older Pika or Pinkachu or something like that. $13 for both folders is great, you did well.

You got a great deal on two older classics.

Both knives are real neat.

Thanks for the responses, guys. Figured I couldn't go wrong with those two knives for $13. Any idea how how to clean them? Both have pretty dirty handles, dust inside the handles, and grime on the blade.

The Benchmade has a hex screw but it opens so smoothly I'm tempted to not even mess with it.

The Spyderco, on the other hand, could use some help with opening smoother... I don't know how I can do that, though

Take the pivot bolts out, make sure the knives are in the open position. Clean the blades, the pivot and the washers. Clean out the lockback on the benchmade and when all done put it back together almost tight, drop a drop of oil or two on the blade and work it in. Locite the bolt with blue loctite and tighten it until its perfect for you. let it sit and voila, it's mint! Works for both.

I think I still have a box of G-2 Delicas and some of the 820,830 BT series from BM lying around here somewhere.
After the metal clip on the Spydies was introduced no one wanted the molded in version.

The spyderco looks like a form of dragonfly and the benchmade looks like a pika. That's my best guess.

The Benchmade is an Ascent. It's basically the FRN version of the AFCK, and is one of my all-time favorite knives. They haven't made those- the old style with smooth reverse slab, ATS-34 and a round hole- for a long time. Mine has been retired, because I carried it for several years, and can't stand the thought of losing it.

I'd say $13 for both of those knives was an excellent deal.

The Spyderco is a Gen1 Dragonfly. My guess is these knives date to around 1996-97.

The pivot bolt on the Benchmade looks like a torx bolt but is the one on the Spyderco removable? It sorta looks like it might be a rivet

the benchmades an 835S, the mini version. good deal, you can easily double or triple up on that purchase.

Thanks for all the help, guys. If I can manage to clean these up, I'll post some updated pictures.
