Old Benchmade and Spyderco folders from the Pawn Shop

The pivot on the Dragonfly is rivited in and not removable. To clean the knives up use hot soapy water and a toothbrush to scrub it out. Rinse it out with very hot water, the hotter the better as the water will evaporate faster. Blow them out with compressed air or "canned air" if you can. A drop of oil on the pivots and you should be good to go.

The pivot on the Dragonfly is a solid pin which is peened on both ends. You would have to drill it out and replace it to take the knife apart. The G-2 steel mark dates the knife to 1994, the year it was introduced.

Well the dragonfly you won't be able to do. What i would do with that one is buy some brake cleaner and spray it all in the blade and lock, working the blade open and closed. It'll get the grittiness out. Then spray one last time just to make sure. Oil and done. Brake cleaner won't hurt the handle and will dry fast and clean. Blow it out with air before oiling though.

Yep definitely looks like a first generation Dragonfly with Spyder Edge. You definitely got a good deal with both knives for $13. You've got yourself two well made knives from premier knife companies that should last you a long time.

I am inspired! I just searched my local area for pawn shops on Google. I am going to do some scouting tomorrow. Thanks for the thread!

You guys are great! Thanks for all the good info and tips. I'll make a new thread after I clean the knives and get some pictures.

and definitely check your local pawn shops! I think the popularity of ebay and craigslist has probably made it a little harder to find deals but you never know what little gem is just waiting to be bought up for a good price.

Congrats On two nice finds at great prices you got me wanting to go scour my local pawn shops now.. :D

Yes! The ascent. I knew it began with an A but i couldn't think of the name. Good call. That benchmade is the benchmade ascent. I didn't know they made 2 different steeled versions though.

It is a rivet on the Spyderco, do not remove it. If you want to you could send it to Spyderco with $5.00 return shipping for a sharpening and ask in your note to see if they could clean up the blade a bit and mention that it is kinda stiff to open. Since the pivot is a rivet there is little service that they can do for that issue. Oil on the pivot and working the knife open and closed many times is how I would proceed on the Spyderco pivot if you are not going to send it in for service.

Great score!

Wash those guys in the kitchen sink, scrub em with an old toothbrush (and some toothpaste), dry em off, and oil them; you've got a nice pair of perfectly usable knives there, at a killer price. Enjoy!

Id try hot soapy water and a scrub brush and rinse under hot water then dry before you go bangin around on anything.

The Ascent was originally the Eclipse (that is the name on the box when I bought mine back around 1997), and was changed because the name was too similar to another knife, the E-clip (IIRC), that was out at the same time.

That larger model went thru some name changes and variations as well. Some had plain edge, combo edge, blackened blade, thumbstud and hole opener. I' m sure at least 1 version/ variant went thru a product recall. Contact Benchmade direct for any particulars.

As for cleaning, why not just blast with some good old WD40? Let soak for a while and air blast away. That should get rid of most of the "junk" buildup. A compressor would be ideal.

The Ascent is a great knife. I lent my brother mine one deer season when he got out in the woods and realized he left his knife in the car. As luck would have it he got a buck that afternoon and put it too good use. Didn't have to touch the ATS-34 edge after all that, just clean it a little.
