Old Boy Scout knives

Yesterday for a whopping 22$ I bought 2 old Boy Scouts knives. One is an ulster that I believe was made in the 60s or 50s. The tang stamp says "ULSTER USA". But the other one is a bit of a mystery. It was made by the Pal Blade Company. I've never even heard of this brand. Could someone give me a bit of history on it, and when they manufactured scout knives? Also, could someone please tell me when ulster used that tang stamp? Maybe some pictures later if I'm feeling ambitious :) They are both very well used

They both have about a third of the blade worn down. The ulster still has good snap though

I've got my grandpas old Ulster from (I wanna say) the 70s and it's still fully functional, not even much wear at all. Cool little knife.

Didn't Pal continue making their own line in parallel with Remington for a while?

They did, and we really need to see a picture of the OP's knife; but, it could be a Pal marked version of the Remington Boy Scout knife.

Does it look like this?

I have owned a boy scout knife since 1973 when I was seven. I can honestly say I used and abused that knife until it was done. The springs became too loose to keep the main blade open. It became unsafe to use. I have recently replaced it with another of the same type. An Ulster 5 blade.

This picture has my old one over the new to show the blade wear. It is also a good shot of the tang stamps.

Hey Meako - how awesome to have the original knife from the days of young.
To me that's a treasure right there.

And here is the pal. The cap lifter is pretty hard to open, so I have used the cap lifter from the ulster. I used a bit of Vaseline to oil the joints of this one, but it isn't as smooth.

I'm enjoying the photos. According to Levine's Guide (page 277), PAL made the official knives from 1940 until 1948. It also says PAL was the first to use plastic handles on the Official Boy Scout knives.

Great photos. Always loved that style but I can't figure out how that type can opener works on those Pal knives.

The little teeth go under the lip of the can and you lift up and the blade swings down to pierce the can sort of like a P38. The blade is offset from the teeth.

My favorite pattern for sure, scout/camp/army/sportsman knives that is. I do not have desire to hoard knives but I definitely wanna pick these when I get the change. I have humble set of Victorinox, Böker, Hartkopf and soon the GEC Texas camp knife.

Thanks for info. For some reason I just can't get the mechanics to work in my mind. I might just have to pick one up to try it out.

My dad's L.F. & C (Landers, Frary, & Clark) Universal Boy Scout knife from the mid 30's. Box is in pretty bad shape (no pic), but knife is looking pretty good.
