Old Boy Scout knives

Thanks for info. For some reason I just can't get the mechanics to work in my mind. I might just have to pick one up to try it out.

The lower mandible of the opener is used to pierce through and then under the lid. The upper mandible (shell extractor) will then rest on the lip of the can so that you may use it to lever the lower mandible up through the lid opening the can. Modern can openers were referred to as "safety" can openers as they drove the sharp edge of the lid down in to the can. This older type drives the sharp edge upward and away from the can.
