Hello everybody, i have a couple questions about the old 422 and 426 model bucklites. First, how much lighter are they than the regular 112 and 110s? What are the handles made out of and how sturdy/strong are they? Are the blades 440 or 420hc? I really like the idea of a lighter 112 and these models seem like just the right solution. Thanks in advance for your input.

I don't know how much lighter they are... But they are a Great knife... I use a 422 for my EDC knife...

i cant tell you what the weigh but they are great edc's !
the 422 is like the 112 and is also a fantastic girls knife!!!
yep IMHO all the 112 or 422 are girlie knifes!

HAY i am 110 MAN my self!! :D:D:D
but i have been known to be caught
with a 112 in my paw now and then....

I dont have the 422 or 426, dont like the handle design that much. I have a 442 which feels like a feather compared to a 110, and a 446 Goiliath which is just a beast of a knife but not much more heavy than the 442 and much lighter than the 110.

Neither can be considered girly:p

I got news for everyone, after you have made the considerable effort to search one of the first two model 112s out and paid the sack full of sawbucks to put it in your paws, you deserve to whip it out at every opportunity.......if its a girly knife she is one tough tart...

How many times when your hands were nasty and you laid your knife down you wished for a bright scale to not forget it. Well, your wish is coming true with the new orange scale Bucks for 2010....BUT some old guys walked that path before those young whippersnappers.

Great looking knives 300 . Thanks for the photo . I have a two line 112, not the bottom one though and like it but don't carry it . Zach, I've done that numerous times on certified scales and Longbows figures are close at less than half the weight of the std. 110 . Take them to any grocery store they all have certified scales at each register . I'm sure "wide awake Wiley" has one at that old grocery store . The first handles were made of valox (used in electric switches) very strong and resistant to most everything . sun, salt, cold, doesn't fair well in fire, chemicals like gasoline don't harm it . There are no factory blades of 440C produced for this model, many 425M blades can be found and 420HC . If you like lite its the way to go and it has a lanyard hole,
something not produced on a 110 or 112 . Another plus . Really no need for a sheath as its easy on the pockets . Hope you enjoy one . DM

300,

nice micarta inv 2 liner-is it in as gooda shape on both sides? and is it a new pick up?

Fritz,
Think I showed a pic of it in the photo thread before, bolsters needed a polish, couple of tiny dings on front bolster edge but scales are good. Sharpened only a little, no sheath, no box. Spring find.

BUT, here is a early model Valox 422 with a dot, the other color from ItsTooEarlies. Somebody refresh my memory on the dot, you know someone is going to ask. I carried this one a little back when, no box but that is the original sheath..... 300

Since I am posting this from home, I don't have any info close by that gives the weight of the first generation (2 pc riveted handles) or second generations (1 pc handles) and I don't remember the weights. But, the material for both of those generations was a GE material called Valox, which is a Polyester based plastic. They had a failry heavy glass loading to increase strength (small glass fibers like fiberglass). The first and second generation Bucklites were essentially bullet proof. I do not recall ever receiving one back for a broken handle.
These Bucklites hold a special place for me as I was my Micarta 112 that we used as the basis for the original 422 Bucklite. The second generation was my project as a project manager/engineer. They are great knives...but I am a bit biased. I have the second knife off of the production line, with my name and the date engraved on it and signed by Chuck. It's one of those things that is priceless (to me at least) and I am proud of it.
I would never hesitate to use one of these for anything.

Dunno... I have an ancient drop point Bucklite with the Valox handle... b*tch to sharpen, probably 440C. Holds a good edge tho'...

My Dad gave me a OD green 422 w/camo sheath on Christmas Day probably in around 1983 or 1984. Before I drastically increased my knife collection, I have cleaned, gutted, and skinned hundreds of fish, ducks, deer, and wild hogs with that knife. It went with me everywhere, on every trip, and even in my pack when skiing. It stays sharp and is small enough for the fine work and big enough for skinning chores in the field. It is the one knife that causes me guilt every time I buy some other folder. A great knife that makes you think "they don't make 'em like they used to". Strong, light, sharp, and useful.

:):):):):)

On my postal scale my "as new" '93 426 weighs exactly 3.0 oz.

The Bucklite blade steel question I've discussed w/ Joe H. at length and he assures me that none of them have 440C blades because by the time they were mfg. Buck had already made the switch to 425M steel . DM

Thanks for contributing to this dicussion Bill . I remember you posting on this topic before in greater detail . One of your special projects . DM

Here is a photo comparison between a:
42801+ Selector single removable blade (1991)similar to original 426 Bucklite
426/110 build out Bucklite ("110" 2008 420HC blade)
The 42801 has 2 rivits in the rear of the handle not on the newer 426
42801 has a metal spacer in rear of handle not in the newer 426
newer 426 has lanyard hole instead of rivit
