Old car in the woods

I was out in the woods a few weeks ago following a river looking for ice free spots to fish. I found something neat I though I would post here.

I had a backpack full of Becker's I was planning to take some pics of anyway and really wish I could have got some better shots.

I pulled out my good camera but was sad to see I forgot the memory card at home in my laptop. So I had to take cell phone pics.

It was a neat old car rotting away in the woods and it looked like a tree had grown through it at some point but was just a big stump now.

It was about 100 yards from the river and didn't look like water had been anywhere near it as far as I could tell but it was really sinking into the ground. I am standing at the back of the car and you can just see the tail light at the bottom left of one of the pictures. The tree appears to have grown through the trunk.

I've been out there in some of those backwoods places around thornton, and sometimes you just see stuff that makes you scratch your head.

And then I frequently wonder how they got that beast there anyway.

Nice shots though, and a cool find for sure :).

The steering wheel alone tell you its an oldie.

Yeah, had to get a pic of that. The shifter had 4 positions, I'm guessing R N 2 1 maybe?

Head scratcher for sure with the tree poking through it. Glad you enjoyed them. :)

That stainless hardware looks sexy with the black blade and grivory. What size are they?

Socket Head Cap screws #10-24 x 5/8" L

Very cool mauser, I love finding cool stuff while exploring in the woods. Good to see you are back. Seemed like you were MIA for a little. Or perhaps I just spend too much time on here

Busted. :D

Yeah I went a bit crazy with the Christmas presents and then my truck spit out the driveshaft on the highway costing me more $$ so i didn't pay my internet bill. Was hoping to squeak through to January but Comcast wasn't having it so I went without internet for about a month.

It was painful being away from here. Thanks for the welcome back my friend. :)

Ah, that would explain the absence though.

Glad to have you back, now there is someone to tell beard jokes about again :).

Also, how is your little girl? Her arm healing up ok?

aah well that explains it. The expensive stuff always seems to crap out at the worst times. Glad you got it sorted out and that you are back!

"how'd that care get here"

"drove it"

"through the trees?"

"trees weren't there then"

most trees you see that aren't giants, probably grew there after the land had been clear cut for farming/fields... *esp* anything under 8 inches.

we have entire forests around here that are barely 6 inches at a go. used to be hayfield, and the woods took over when it stopped being used. poke around a little, you'll find the property markets, stone walls, original existing trees that might have been the few to survive the farm yard, including often, fruit trees just "randomly" placed in the forest.

take a look at any given piece of land through eyes 100 years old. a lot changes. some things don't.

i've seen the woods claim a piece of abandoned road, covered in concrete and asphalt in just a handful of years. given 25 years increments? yeah, lot of our rural infrastructure would nearly vanish.

good for metal detectives :)

one of the huge tricks, is finding where THE tree on the hill was. every farm has one. easy to find. even if it's been cut down. people bury all kinds of crazy stuff near landmarks :)

People will go to great lengths to find a place to skronch.

Nice find! Whereabouts did you find that anyway? I may have to wander that direction soon...

I love finding stuff in the woods that don't belong there.

Me and Lady found this one on a day hike once. Its from when they used to log the Smokies.

I found this old boot the other day. It's pretty cool to come across old stuff in the woods. Found a few cars too, but they werent too far from a road, or really that old even.

She is doing great. The doctor said her bone growth is amazingly fast and is 75% healed. He was able to change her cast to a smaller one that allows her elbow to bend now and weighs about half of what the other one did. Were supposed to be 2 to 4 weeks away from removing the cast all together.

Its down south from us. I was following the South Platte river between Chatfield reservoir and Cooley lake. One of my winter trout fishing spots I go to while everyone else is sitting on the ice. I don't like ice. Surprisingly packed with wildlife for being so close to the city. Besides the fish I saw deer, beaver, hawk and a coyote that day. Unfortunately the water level is lower than I have ever seen it so the fishing is pretty slow right now but its still a fun 4 mile hike.

Thanks for all the interesting comments and pictures everyone. Fun thread!

I love findin old stuff like this. Glad to have you back Mauser, and glad to hear your girls doing well.
I found an old car in a creek bed when I was living in Longmont Colorado. The dry climate and lack of salting the roads lets old cars hold up a long time up there. It was in surprisingly good shape and clearly one of the earliest models of cars.
I got in and sat in what was left of the drivers seat, and felt like an old gangster.

Glad to hear the youngster is back up and running pretty much. I'm sure she'll be glad to get back into roller derby when the time comes :).

And yea, I really find old junk like this left around really interesting.

I was camping/offroading with some buddies in AZ one time and got to a relatively more difficult part where you were forced onto a shelf road and then down some moab-like slickrock. Right in the middle of that shelf road right before the slickrock was an old truck that had clearly been abandoned because they could neither go up nor down. I spent a half our yesterday looking around teh interwebz for a shot of it, but never did.

I found out later it is part of what is known as Hackberry Creek trail in AZ. So if any of you guys are bored... you can try to find photos of that old rig by the side of the road :).

scuba diving once in an old quarry, at the bottom, very amusements that only divers will know ...

someone built, by hand, by moving rocks, a large cairn and placed on top - a toilet :) nice.

there was also a car, which we got into and "drove". hah. popped the hood, checked the oil - oops - it floats - just a few drops after all these years.

pretty weird stuff to be found if you look

wow, that car is mangled... Been there one heck of a long time.
Only cool thing I've ever found was an old moonshine still. Everything was there, if the wood wasn't rotted and the copper wasn't corroded to the point of it being a crap filled pipe instead of a nice clear line, it would have worked just fine.
Oh yeah, and I also found a crack smoking birth certificate bearing hobo on our local church's property... No joke
