Here's my old fart friction folder. If anyone would have any information on the smith's mark, it would come greatly appreciated!

Those were made by two families in Trattenbach in Austria, and there was one family left, as I recall the yarn. Called Taschenfeitel or Taschenzaunkerl.
They're being sold now in stainless by Swiss Advance.
Here is a link to the horse's mouth:

Rick they have a cap lifter which is the chef’s kiss. He talks about the file steel on his site. Here’s just a bit.

“Heat treatment. Files are so tough because they are so hard. So hard that, they're brittle. They can snap like an ice-cicle or glass if not properly heat treated... We conduct a tempering process to the steel to bring that hardness down, re-shape them to blades, then the final process of re-hardening the steel blades to bring them back up but no longer brittle. “

Very nice fellow. He sent a pic of some blades.

Thank you for the reply. Very interesting I was wondering about tempering but it seems that they are actually annealing and hardening them.

Have had this K'roo frickie for a very long time. Willem may possibly wish I hadn't shown it, but it is a wonderful beast.......a very long ago part of the development of folders he went through. I love it.

The blade strops to a hair-popping sharpness too. Top man.

- did a comparison some years ago, together with Michael Morris frickies, of blade length, hence this weird pic...

"thinking" I will add my MAM Sheepsfoot, in case the Wharncliffe in my SAK Mini Champ falls short.

(MAM installed leather thong/Fob)

She is at least as slicy as my Opinel #6 with Inox blade, and from what I recall, my Opinel #8 with Carbone blade. 😁👍

(Obviously, I have not "fixed" the slight belly of the factory grind, yet.)

These are pretty roughly finished. Tuned up the smaller one by sanding the blade to a near mirror, then etched with ferric chloride, followed by a scotch brite pad..... tried to mimic a carbon blade. Also added a strip of leather for the blade to rest on.

Heavy hand on the pile side of the blade. Trying to decide where to cut a swedge to make it look a little better.
