I have a couple of old 10-15 year old folders that are stiff from lying in the closet unused. They have thumbstuds but are really too stiff to open that way.
And they are too old to have adjustable pivot screws to loosen them up. Any suggestions on how to get them more operable? Thanks.

I would oil the joints with Formsbys Lemon Oil or something similar. Or even soak them in oil overnight.

I don't know of any pivot screws that are really meant to be "adjusted". If simply loosened to be easier to open, you end up with a loose or off center blade. However they can be made to be too tight.

Anyway, in your situation it just sounds like a good cleaning and oiling is in order. If it were mine, I'd clean, spray down good with wd40, work it in a little, then use air compressor to blow most of it back out. Then if it needs a little light oil after that, apply as needed.

Spray out the whole knife with WD-40, putting direct hard spray into the pivot from a coupe of sides for a few seconds. Then start working the blades/handle. Cycle it 40-50 times then let it dry overnight. Wipe it down next day, being sure to clean in every small space and cycle it some more. Then start using it for a while and see what you think.

The smell will be gone after a week if you leave it on the porch every night.
