Who do you consider a minor? Any body under 18?

That is the conventional definition of "minor," yes.

So, you would trust an 18 year old on a computer, but not a 17 year old? That's not quite fair to the 17 year old.

By that rationale, it's not fair to someone who is 17 that someone who is 18 may vote, but someone who is 17 may not. You have to draw the line somewhere.

When people turn 18 they get and stay really wierd and immature for about a year afterward(a lot of time the immaturity over rides what it was when they were 17).

If that's true, we should raise the bar to 19. Perhaps we should consider anyone under 21 to be a minor.

After reading the posts, I feel that everyone acted in the way that they should have. Not only was his first post incoherent, but the second post he made was extrememly inappropriate. Kids like that just make me shake my head, when I realize that one day they are probably going to do something that will cause us to lose the right to enjoy the things that we do. As far as people being too hard on FNGs, well I was one just a few months ago, hell, I'm still an FNG, and I have nothing but the nicest things to say about the members of this forum that I've interacted with. They've been understanding, patient, and informative. Of course I haven't made any posts inquiring how to make weapons I could sneak into school. Even my more recent post on buying automatic knives, the forumites that responded were in no way demeaning, and some seemed to express concern. I feel that if someone is going to post drivel(sp?) like weed trimmer, or whatever his name was, then flame the hell out of them. Make them understand that it's fine to be silly once in a while, but if they really want to be a part of the forums, they need to act a little more mature, and use a little discretion and common sense in their posts.

Ok, maybe when I said we should teach FNG's to act more mature, I wasn't thinking of the group that we have hear. Heh heh.

OK, Guys. I do see where you are coming from and I do agree with you. However, I do have one little problem.

Where did this FNG actually come out and say he was taking or wanted to take these knives to school? He has made only 3 posts and none have been edited (at least that I have seen). Nowhere in his 3 posts does it say anything about taking the knives to school. I caught the original post just before leaving for the Blade Show so it is hard for me to remember if anything changed since.

I don`t see where this guy suggested taking knives to school. I think we may have lost something in the translation from English into American. I think when he says "for school kids", he means school-aged kids who can`t afford to buy knives. I don`t think he meant for kids to take to school. I think some folks over reacted to the words "knife" and "school" being used in the same topic line. I didn`t get the impression that he meant any harm. I`m always sorry to see people (kids or otherwise) mistreated in this forum. It`s sad to see.

When I first came to this forum, about 6 mos aog, I asked some pretty dumb questions, but nothing really contreversial or inflamatory. I was nver accused of trolling for asking stuff that had been asked five million times, like what's your daily carry? What knife should I carry for self defense? I think the forums are good at telling someone who's just dumb, like I was, from someone who asks a question out of malice or the desire to start something. Do we screw up sometimes? Yeah, but as razoredge posted, most people who post in public forums need to be think skined and deal with flames. Just my 2 cents.

"we should teach FNG's to act more mature,"
In my opinion the abbreviation for this thread and used in numerous posts in this thread says it all. Immature...

Are we immature for using this as an abbreviation? or are we just "having fun"

I have thick skin for a SNG (smart new guy) or some of you may use the "S" to mean something else
smile.gif
so I live with it, but ask yourselves, would you say the term to your wife, daughter, son, boss, husband, etc. Try calling them the first word in that abbreviation. How would it go over. The "F" abbreviation is not needed in my opinion. (unless it means fun or fantastic)

However, let me state - I will die for your right to say it, and or write it in this forum. Just don't say it or write it to my family.

my two cents, my personal opinion,

Wade

p.s. maybe we should list all the terms "F" stands for besides what I think it does. lol fun, fair, fine, etc. etc.

Barry, of course you're right we should encourage the Newbies that come here, but it's also their job to learn the lay of the land before they post. Which means they should read and learn first how certain subjects are going to be responded to. I don't care if the Forum is about Knives or Knitting it's just smarter. I really don't care if the Newbie is 6 or 60 the way they present themselves is the way they are going to be treated. Maybe if you're too thin skinned and can't stand some ribbing you should start collecting spoons and not knives. We all came here to learn and fit in, but I have to tell you I have a very low boiling point when it comes to the terminally stupid no matter what the age. For me it's getting harder and harder here to find any adult discussions on knives, so I spend a lot less time reading here and I post a lot less. I spend a lot more time in the Chat room if I want to be with real KnifeKnuts.

Let me quote from his second post...in which for some reason he was responding to his own question:

"ps if you have any other good homemade weapon iedas, post em"
(quoted as posted)

He wasn't asking about knives as tools or knifemaking as a skill or hobby.

The fact that he disappeared so quickly once he saw the reaction his posts pretty much confirms his intent. His post was in the context of homemade weapons for school kids. I don't think we misunderstood anything.

Sounds like a great idea to me... My parents will buy me knives if I provide the money, and I don't smoke. I have no reason to want to hurry and stop being a minor.

I haven't read all of the other responses, so if I'm repeating what someone else said, just forgive them, as they were reading my mind while I was doodling with crayons.

Hedgetrimmer was a troll. Period.
.
When a FNG posts here, he's at the mercy of the other members. If someone asks a totally moronic question, a totally moronic answer is called for.

It doesn't take too much thought to realize when a FNG is here just to yank our collective chains. Sometimes an FNG will show up here and be quite obnoxious, and they finally see the error of their ways and change. I don't wanna mention any names, but that person's name rhymes with "The Jeneral". He still annoys people, but he's trying harder to get along.

Now, geting back to Hedgtrimmer....
His post started off as moronical. He was responded to appropriately. This is how we educate others.
For example, someone raised without manners might feel that blowing snots out of their nostrils at dinner is acceptable. Yet, if they did this at YOUR house, would you not calmly berate the person?
I would.
