Heres an update for the old hick I'm working on, Silver soldered the guard on and finished shaping the tang...just gotta drill the antler and pin the blade (set in epoxy). This guy will have a raw hide sheath that should be durable outdoors.

Dang, man! That's gorgeous! "Extreme Makeover: Old Hickory Edition" :D:thumbup:

LOL thanks man, can't wait to see how it turns out when i get her all together...never seen anyone put a guard on an old hickory knife so I took it to the next level. :D

I've always felt like the Old Hickory knives offered a great canvas for the hardcore and hobbyist knife tinkerers alike. Also IMO they make an excellent field knife from the get go sans a sheath. I've been playing around with a "pig sticker" here lately. My grandpa saw it and so far he's the only person I've met who knows what it is and how to use it. He said when they used to butcher their hogs on the farm back in the day they'd use it to bleed the hog out after killing or stunning it in the head with a 22 short.

So cool!

Makes me want to go out in my garage and get to work. I have two knives I have started and never finished out of 5160 bar stock. I finished one, but just kind of pooped out on the rest.

Be sure to update the photo's when done.

what is the spine thickness on these? I bet it is fast in the hand!

Heres another shot for ya...pins just mocked in place, will epoxy it next week.

Thanks a lot guys! More pics will come when its epoxied and then the fun wood core raw hide sheath. The blade thickness is 0.095" which is just perfect for the needs of this knife.

PS. I have 3 other old hicks that i have plans for, they are oldies i found in my basement with the handles cracked.

Nice work! I have an old hickory butchers knife that i got for free because it was snapped off towards the top so i just took a file to it and turned it in the a nice little 5" drop point with a convex edge and used some old hardwood flooring to make the new handle, now its my main outdoors hard-use knife. I have used it to baton wood and even to hack apart bigger logs and it holds a great edge even after that! Not bad for a free knife!

I got this steak knife at a garage sale for a buck. As soon as I saw it I knew it was coming home. It was completely dull. But now this baby is hair shaving sharp. Any body know where I might find a decent sheath for it?
