I thought I'd share some pics of a little project I did this week. I took an Old Hickory skinner and made a Nessmuk style blade out of it. (I see now that others have done this as well) I took photos so I'll go ahead and share. The OH knives come real rough, but with some elbow grease they clean up nice.

First I marked out the general shape.

Then I went to the grinder. I used a bucket of ice water to keep things cool.

I got close to the shape I wanted on the grinder, but next its off to the 1 x 30 belt sander to finish.

Belt sander got me to the desired shape.

And cleaned up/smoothed out the spine and handle.

Finished product with an edge on it. What do you think?

Now I need to procure a sheath. Know anyone who wants to trade a OH Nessmuk for a sheath?

You did a Great Job on the Nessmuk ! I like Old Hickory Knive's I got guite a few I use just as they are, There a Great Buy for the Money, Thank's for sharing your Mod. work detail's, And for all the picture's,

Nicely done , Firefox.
Now all you need is a convex edge on that bad boy.:D
Great stuff.
Later,
Iz

Hey, it looks great! Good eye for proportion and rounding the spine

On the next mod, think about pulling off the scales and adding custom one's of your own.

That looks awesome:thumbup:. I've been wanting to do one of my own for a while now. Bet one of these OH mods would look cool with natural or burlap micarta.

I have a new one (OH) sitting here waiting for the same mod treatment...I think you just pushed me off the fence.
I'll be replacing the handle with a carhartt like canvass micarta however.....and sheath to match.....( Firefox....I have a cool sheath design in mind, I'll pass it along to you when I'm done)

Lookin good!! Remember that you can take the scales off, reshape the tang, re-drill pin holes, and make the knife totaly different!!!

OH's are one of the best deals out there, and a great project. Nice work!

Wait... I take that back! You guys stop buying those inexpensive good quality knives, dang it! You're going to run us makers out of business!

:D

Very cool. I like the swept blade on that. I don't know why but I like blades that have a continuous curve to it. Nice result.

That looks great! I have a couple of brand new ones sitting around waiting for me to try my hand at it. Hopefully they will turn out that nice.

You might try a Ka-Bar leather sheath. The large sheath should work. If you want to try this, I have found somewhere the brown Ka-Bar sheath with no Ka-Bar brand marking on it.:D

See Fox what you made me go do???
When I took the handles off I found a bonus hole for new pins!! I rounded the corners of the handles up a bit.
I decided to go with Osage for handles, have one side with glue drying now...

Thanks for all the kind words. I appreciate it, especially from the talented knifemakers here. I am already planning on doing another one a bit smaller and have my eye on a few other OH knives...

Glad I could be a prod in your rear Rayban. Keep us posted on your progress. I am interested to see what you had in mind for a sheath. I have neither the skills nor the tools for proper sheath making.

Great work . I have done the same conversion before, but your's lookd much neater. I am in the midst of an old hickory cabbage knife make over as we speak.
