I've had a few customers ask if I ever make "carbon steel" knives. (Like CPM154 isn't a "real" knife steel) One of the items mentioned was the hammer forged (or stamped) steel used in the older "Old Hickory" knives. Texas Knifemakers Supply used to sell this many years ago.
Has anybody seen a supply of this recently?

hey Bill-
The thing the customers liked was the rectangular pattern stamped in the steel. I told them that a selective heat treated O1 blade could give them what they need, but they want that pattern.
If I were a dishonest person..... no...

It really makes no difference if a blade is made from another blade, or from a piece of flat stock. Start with a factory knife, just tell them what you did.

Tell the customer that you can have a custom die made for your press that will emboss the exact pattern they like . The cost will be about an extra $500 for the knife.......and the knife will be the same.
I bet they will see the light.
BTW, if they are really into carbon steel blades, use 1084 or 1095. It is the preferred type of steel for those who like to "steel" their blades before each use.

BTW, if anyone actually wanted to do this ( in any pattern) ,David at Great Lakes waterjet should be able to cut anything you want in the die face. It is called an embossing die.You need a matching top and bottom die, usually.
